Arrival Story: This was my fiancee's dog. He got her when he was younger. She was raised by wild adolescent boys.

Bio: She actually lived with my mother-in-law. We used to live with her too, but bought our own house 20 mins away. We didn't want to leave his mom alone, so Sierra kept her company. We would visit her often, and occasionally she came to stay with us for a few days here or there. She had a stroke in early August 06, and has some trouble with a head tilt. She got dizzy and tired easily after that, but was still a trooper. She has increasingly stumbled and fell, but for the most part was in excellent shape and bounced right up - even when Arthur knocked her down. She used to be the most wild spazzy dog, at 12 she had more pizazz than our puppy. Before the stroke, people didn't believe she was as old as she is when they 1st met her. Even after the stroke, she could still trick some people, thinking she was MUCH younger than she really was.
At 14 - she was is pretty good health/shape despite the stroke, and seemed to get a little strongr every day. She eventually was able to correct her head tilt and walk straight.
In mid-July 2007, We almost lost Sierra. We had been experiencing hot 84 degrees VERY (like 87%) humid beginning of the week. We had gone for a walk, and though it was hot, and did seem humid - it didn't seem that bad. We went to the field Sierra loved so much because it was the middle of the day on a Monday, and figured no one would be there. There wasn't anyone there, and we did have a nice walk. This ended up as Sierra last walk. We rested in the shade for a brief moment before heading back. On the way back it was obvious Sierra was having a harder and harder time breathing - she was kind of wheeze coughing, and slowing in her walking. We started heading up the low grade hill right at the end near the parking lot, and she really slowed down, so my fiancee picked her up and carried her. Sierra looked scared, but we could all tell she knew we were helping her. My fiancee had to set her down a moment when a person on a bike came by and she peed (we think because she was scared). She was really having a hard time then. We drove home quickly, and got some water, but she wouldn't drink, and collapsed trying to breath in the front yard. Her sides were heaving as she struggled to breathe - it was really sad and scary. We took her to the vet and they got her oxygen, and iced her tummy, gave her some fluids, and kept her for the afternoon. That evening they went and picked her up and she looked SO much better - she didn't have that lost dying look in her eyes, and ran around like nothing happened. She's old - but none of us were ready to say goodbye . If Sierra were 6 years younger - she and Arthur would be on a tandem sled dog team - she LOVED to pull - even IF she was a Lab. Sierra got pills to help her breathing (which occasionally was bad just walking around home too), and they really did help her, she was taken off them a few days before she died.

My fiancee got a call to go to his mom's as soon as he could in the late afternoon. When he got there they scooped Sierra up and drove to the vet. She was basically unresponsive when my fiancee's mom had arrived home from work *will spare you a few other not so great details.
Sierra passed on a few minutes after arriving at the vet - unassisted. The vet told my giancee and his mom to just hold off a few minutes on giving the injection (he must have known).
She waited until her boy came home one last time to say goodbye, and was surrounded by her boy and human mom. She was a good dog.
Arthur could tell something was up. He seemed kind of sad -- we wondered if he knews why? We came home with a bunch of Sierra's stuff (my fiancee's mom didn't want it around - understandably so).
I want to thank everyone for your kind words - we have found a couple times that Dogster is such a wonderful healing place for humans - and it reminds us that there are some very wonderful caring strangers out there.
We love you Sierra - you are already missed. Give Sasha a whole bunch of licks for us!
She knew what it meant when you spell out "W-A-L-K", so you couldn't even say "W" without actually taking her on one - she would get too excited. She also knew the word "BATH" and that often it meany she had been baaaad.
She will be missed!
