Bita, Bita-Boo, Noo-Nee, Schnuckums, Curly Girl, Little Girl, Bita Pretty Girl

Doggie Dynamics:
not playfulvery playful

Quick Bio:

January 1st 2006

Going places with me in the car, playing fetch, playing tag, having her tummy rubbed, training sessions, "friends" (any person or pet) coming over or really anywhere (especially her best friend Daisy, a cocker spaniel, who lives next door).

When I leave the house for anything at all, or shut her out of the room I'm in.

Favorite Toy:
Compressed rawhide bones; an airplane pillow that looks like a pink stuffed poodle that she's not supposed to play with, all toys that can be thrown and fetched.

Favorite Food:
Innova EVO (Natura Pet Products), and bananas- I always give her a chunk when I eat one.

Favorite Walk:
To the mailbox and back; towards anyone approaching her.

Best Tricks:
Roll-over, shake, dance, working on beg, and moping- when she's bored or mad at me.

Arrival Story:
When I decided that I was going to get a dog, I knew that I had to get one that was good for people with minor dog allergies. I found that both Maltese and Poodles were on the list of "hypo-allergenic" dogs, because they only have the one layer of hair, not dander. They also don't shed which was a MUST!!! But, I didn't want a purebred out of either of those breeds, because I wasn't really drawn to how they look. Plus some sources say that mix breeds can be much healtier and live longer than purebreds, due to having a larger gene pool. Then my best friend told me that I had to see a photo of this dog called a Maltipoo. I was smitten! They looked like the best of both breeds, and were small too! ( I had to have an inside dog, due to having no back yard) I researched and interviewed many breeders and found one I liked in NE Missouri. I flew out and was allowed to choose out of 3 puppies. Abita was the most confident, adventurous, curious and sweet one there. She fell asleep in my arms within the first hour of me being there. I felt like she chose me. Small dogs are notoriously super-hyper, timid and yippy, but Abita is none of those! She has the most balanced, best personality I have every seen in any dog ever! My husband came up with the name Abita after his favorite Louisiana beer company, in Abita Springs. He was determined to give her a name that wasn't too girly, but I think he failed.. it's such a unique, beautiful and feminine name. Anyways, I love her!!

Abita's mother was an AKC registered Apricot Toy Poodle, and her dad was an AKC registered Maltese. I got her when she was 8 wks old and she was one of the larger ones in her litter. The breeder said probably between 4 and 6 lbs, but that you never know with a mix breed. She is currently 6.3 lbs.

Hey everyone! Man, I sure was getting bored for awhile. Mom had to go to school everyday and Dad of course worked all day too. I was really starting to get depressed and sad. One day, a few months ago, Mom and Dad took me on a trip. I didn't know what it was for, but I like trips. We stayed at Dad's cousin's house for a night and then the next day we went to someone's house. When I walked inside I was slightly overwhelmed. There were around 7 or 8 dogs there! I didn't know what we were doing there, so I hung around Mom. Then this little white dog jumped up on the chair with us. He was really little and not very energetic. He didn't bother me so I just let him sit by me and climb on Mom and Dad. They kept on trying to make me play with all these dogs, but I was not interested so much. The little white dog kept following me around, but I just ignored him.. he didn't seem like too much of a threat. As we were getting in the car, I came to a confusing realization: the little white dog was coming with us! I sort of thought we might be just borrowing him for awhile so at first I didn't do anything about it. But he stayed with us longer and longer! I started snapping at him in the car because he was all over my Mom and Dad and he wasn't leaving! He came all the way home with us. I was very confused. I just kept watching him, analyzing him, trying to figure out what was his thing? Who was he and was he going to try and take over my house?! Weeks went by, then months. They started calling him Archie. I slowly realized that he was not leaving. That he was just a goofy little kid who didn't have any family, and that Mom and Dad decided that we should be his family. He had been on the street getting no love. My heart softened, and I decided to take him under my wing. He's at least 3 lbs lighter than me so I roll on my back to let him attack me, and I try to play by fighting over toys, although I think he may get a little overwhelmed by that. Sometimes he sleeps with me in my kennel, and I try to keep him clean by licking his eyes.. he has pretty bad tear stains which I don't have to deal with. He sleeps with all of us in bed now and just burrows under the covers which is good: if he tried sleeping in my spot by Mom, we would have a problem. I still have to teach him a lot, but I really enjoy having someone to play with all day long. He's really funny.

Eating Candy and More!

Hey everyone. Sorry I haven't written for awhile. Mommy has been really busy in school and hasn't been able to help me write as often. Even when she gets home, she often has homework to do and can't play with me as much as she used to. I guess I got spoiled. Also, her car broke down last Sunday, so she's had to stay at school until around 4:30 somedays, until Daddy can pick her up and bring her home. That has meant extra alone time for me.. which I am NOT happy about. I have all this pent up energy that I just don't know what to do with! So.. I've been inventing new games for myself. My latest and greatest fun happened today. Mommy was not feeling good and so she laid down for awhile. I was just walking around, sniffing everything, minding my own business like usual, when I smelled something new. I took a closer look, and a side pocket on Mommy's backpack was unzipped. Inside were these little brown things wrapped in orange wrappers. So, I did what any dog would do.. I put it in my mouth. WOW!!! That tastes amazing! So I continued to eat them for quite awhile. Daddy finally came in from trying to fix the car and caught me in the act. He yelled at Mommy for letting me get into them. Aparently they're Root Beer flavoured hard candy. Anyways, I had pieces stuck all up in my hair and everything. Mommy was not happy, but cleaned me up. I don't think I'll ever get to have those again.

Back to School

My life has gone through a transition recently. Mom started going back to school, so now I have to keep myself occupied for awhile each day. It's been alright though... a little more "me" time. I've mostly been playing with my toys and taking naps, which I normally do in the afternoon anyways; I'm mostly active in the morning and at night. I do occasionally find some new things to do though. Last week Mommy left a cardboard box with some clothes in it on the floor. After she left, I scratched and bit up the side of it until I'd had my fill. It was so much FUN!!! I could tell that Mommy wasn't too happy about it when she came home and unfortunatly the box has never been back. I've gotten used to being at home by myself for the afternoons, but I sure am excited when Mommy comes home!!!
