Arrival Story:
McDuff is a Katrina victim with an unknown birthday. The vet estimates that he's 1.5 years as of Summer '06. As our other dog's birthdate is unknown and we made his adoption day his birthdate, we're giving the same birthdate to McDuff. Somebody brought some animals from New Orleans, after Katrina hit, to Georgia and then left them at a dumpsite. The animals had to fight for food and live among trash until someone took them to a shelter. Unfortunately it was a kill-shelter, but luckily a volunteer brought McDuff and another beagle mix up to Virginia where Homeward Trails volunenteers took them in. Unfortunately McDuff's hardships did not end there. After three months of living in foster care, learning how to live inside, and that he was safe, burglers broke into the house, kicked the other dog downstairs and left the door open when they espcaped. McDuff got out and was gone for six weeks before he was found again, 50 miles away, living outside a trailer in freezing February temperatures, fighting two, much bigger, German Shepherds for food. The foster mom brought him back to Northern Va. again and had to start all over with his training. He was adopted by us, to be the brother of Hewitt, another Homeward Trails beagle/basset mix rescue, on August 18, 2006. Hewitt, whom we adopted in January '06, is delighted with his little brother and the two get along fabulously. The house is filled with happy doggy sounds as they play and wrestle all the time!
