Quick Bio:
-purebred

Birthday:
May 16th 1994

Likes:
Sleeping, chasing balls, eating, swimming and then breading himself in the sand

Pet-Peeves:
rudeness, burrs in his beard, puppies, baths, haircuts, and he will not tolerate toenail clipping

Favorite Toy:
Any ball of any sort

Favorite Food:
thai and indian food, pizza and ice cream, hoof shavings after farrier day at the barn

Favorite Walk:
Roy is a notorious dawdler - he likes any leisurely walk but especially about town and don't rush him!

Best Tricks:
Oddly, Roy's a swimmer, which is quite an accomplishment since his legs are 2 inches long . His lifejacket makes him more buoyant so he can troll the shoreline.

Arrival Story:
Roy is an old soul. Acquired from a backyard breeder when he was a tiny urchin - 90% head. Roy is all about dignity. He is very polite, reserved, independent, and reliable. He resents a leash, and is only made to wear one when he's dawdling particularly badly. He is the perfect gentleman, distinguished at all times, and finds all puppyish behavior distasteful and gauche. He is intolerant of juvenile antics and silliness, although he's a fool for a tennis ball as long as the game is played properly. He has recently been diagnosed with Cushing's disease but we are managing it well so far. He is very cherished and adored.

Forums Motto:
I only hurry slowly.

oral melanoma

We managed to keep Roy comfortable for a while. We made him special meals, managed his medications, took him on little solo outings, and hugged and kissed him so that he knew he was loved. Then the tumor began to take all his nutrition. It got bigger and bigger and he got smaller and smaller. We ran out of medical options and could only tend to his comfort. And finally, we couldn't seem to do that anymore either. This excellent boy left us on July 7th. He was 13. We were fortunate to be blessed by his presence for as long as we were, and I will miss him forever.

oral melanoma

We've been doctoring for oral melanoma the past few months. Vet found a weird growth on Roy's gum line during spring shots. He had surgery to debulk the tumor and remove 3 teeth, but since then the tumor has grown to be quite large and irritating. The U of Wisconsin has a DNA vaccine that is supposed to be a great new approach for oral melanoma, but it isn't available in other locations yet. We're on the list at the U of Minnesota Vet School should it become available while it might still be useful to us. Until then, we're managing day to day.

The vet found the tumor when Roy went for his lyme vaccine. Surgery removed most of it, but the surgeon said that it extended into the bone and was more extensive than he expected. His upper canine and two teeth behind it were removed. Roy seems to be recovering well and has no trouble eating. We're investigating the possibility of getting the new DNA melanoma vaccine at the U of Minnesota Veterinary Hospital, but it won't be available until the middle of May.
