Arrival Story:
In the autumn of 1978 I was still in Primary school. My route to school took me past my favourite shop - Joneseeds pet shop. The shop window carried advertisements, including one for Jack Russell puppies (£10).
I pestered my parents for one of the puppies, and they held out, until one fateful day, when Dad rolled in drunk from the pub. He took me down to the puppies' home, and we knocked on the door. An old man answered. Dad asked about the puppies, and in reply was handed a large brown pup. 'That'll be £10, mate' said the old guy. Dad duly coughed up the amount.
We took the puppy home, ('his name's Butch', the old chap had said), and Mum, as soon as she clapped eyes on him, protested. 'That's not a Jack Russell', she proclaimed, 'look at the size of it's paws - like soup plates!'. Of course, she was right, the old guy had cheated us. I was too young to know any better, and Dad was too drunk. It was the best mistake ever made in my life.
He grew up to be an intelligent, laid-back, affectionate dog, a true companion for a little girl growing up. He and Pretty were my best friends as I grew up.
Bio:
Butch had to be put to sleep, at the ripe old age of 15 years, early in the New Year of 1994. I held him as he passed away.
