Arrival Story:
* Update* We lost Bubba on June 6, 2008. He was my heart and my soul for 3 years, my best friend and he will be greatly missed I had made the decision to get a Mastiff, although I was still learning about the breed and had never even seen a real one. We had decided to go with a rescue and a male, hopefully a fawn under the age of 2. I had contacted our rescue here in North Carolina but had several problems getting them to get back to me. Our vet was aware of my interest and supported us. One Sunday afternoon our vet had gone to Walmart and in the parking lot, there was a woman hitting a dog with her fists in the face and head. He was shocked and concerned and took the dog. Our vet called us that afternoon and was not sure if the dog was a Mastiff but suspected it was. He was male, but we did not know his age. I wanted to go look but my husband was hesitant but I convinced him to go at least see the dog. Our vet had planned on contacting rescue if we did not want to take the dog. My first thought seeing him was oh WOW that is a huge dog and my second was a let down, knowing he was not really what we were looking for and that there was no way my husband was going to agree to take this dog into our home. He was a very dark brindle and had awful lumps on his rear end and elbows. And I knew the breed was huge, but this dog was beyond that! He weighed 150 we found out later that day. The dog came right to us though and sat down at my feet and started thumping his tail. The vet said he had some minor health stuff going on, the most severe being pressure point callouses that had broken open and become infected and left untreated. They were very unattractive but the vet felt they could heal with treatment. His face was swollen and he had scratches and cuts all over him, most infected. You could barely see his eyes because his face was so swollen. I am still not sure why we decided to take him home that day, although I do remember that it was not permanent. I thought he could teach me something about the breed before I got that dog that was going to be ours forever and that he could go into rescue once he was healed up and fed a little. His former owner had said his name was Banner and that he was 5 years old and that she had had him only a short amount of time. One of our friends came over that evening and spoke to the dog, calling him Bubba and his tail went crazy, the name stuck. And he stuck too. Each day he was with us, I was just amazed. He has the sweetest disposition and is wonderful with our kids, but most of all, he turned out to be just what I needed. I had been struggling with some health problems and a drastic change in my lifestyle had left me home alone all day and very lonely. I had lost my boxer to pancreatic cancer and for ages did not want another dog, and even now did not want a 5 year old dog with health problems. Especially not one who was completely unknown and way bigger than me. He started some meds, both oral and topical for his sores. It required that I get out of bed, wash and treat his sores and spend time with him to keep him from licking everything off immediately. He was underweight and malnourished and his diet required some research which gave me a purpose. He needed frequent walks on a leash for potty breaks and exercise. I made so many mistakes those first few weeks, but he never complained. The only thing that upset him was losing sight of me, even for a quick trip to the bathroom. By his third day with us, he knew our schedules and would be waiting at the door when it came time for the school bus and again when he heard my husband return from work. There was never a day when we said OK he is going to stay with us forever, after that first day it never occurred to us that he might leave. His former owner surrendered him and is currently in prison. His health has cleared up amazingly and now he is not only underweight, he is approaching being overweight and we have started having to watch his diet more carefully. We are pretty sure he is pure bred and the vet has put his age in the 3-4 year range instead 5 years. And he is still right by my side. He has gained confidence over the eleven months he has been with us, we struggled with minor problems, the biggest being separation anxiety but he turned out to be very well trained. All in all, he has made our family complete. I still want a puppy. I still want a fawn male (although those apricots are looking better and better) but now I can't imagine my life without this huge brindle boy. He still looks a bit rough and he scares almost everyone when they met him for the first time. He stops traffic when I walk him in the yard. I can't imagine my life not having a Mastiff now and I will never regret agreeing to take him into our family.

Bio:
His past is a mystery I would love to solve. At some point he was well-trained and he doesn't look to be poorly bred. He is healthy and happy and would be a credit to any breeder.
