Arrival Story:
Gerdie was found living and cowering in a outdoor stairwell of a local church. She was exhausted, hungry, paws swollen & abraded, & apparently had a litter recently. The person who had found her placed an ad in the market for a lost dog. Since no one had ever claimed Gerdie, the lady kept her as long as possible 7-8 months. The lady posted a flyer in the Thriftway Market window with Gerdie's sad history along with a photo and I couldn't resist.

Bio:
Gerdie apparently been abused by her past owner, before the nice lady rescued her. She cowered when voices were raised, and was always fearful she would be hit. She had never been house broken. I suspect that was the reason she was beaten and ultimately discarded like a piece of garbage. We live in a small town and someone would have searched for her if they really lost her. I know she was dumped. Many people think of pets as being disposable. As matter of fact many people feel that way about marriages and children also. Gerdie really has had a hard life. She was extremely depressed. I have a small farm with many pets, and my husband and I both work full time. I feel guilty Gerdie didn't get the attention she really needed. Gerdie's last run in the woods proved to be a devastating one. An evil neighbor poisioned her as she stopped at his pond for a drink before coming home. Her and the boys loved to run in my wooded land which adjoined his, chasing squirrels, turkey, and having a good ol' time. Since she was obese Gerdie would often lag behind, always howling for the boys to wait up. I believe this has irritated this "Christian" man to no end. I had trouble with this evil neighbor before. He has shot & killed all of my ducks from his back porch. I had also found my precious cat Boop wedged in a tree on his property. I had thought Gerdie was exhausted from the run, which was typical since she was so obese. Two days had passed and her condition had worsened. That night I had soaked her in a warm, soapy bath to relieve her sore paws and joints, and scheduled an appointment with the vet in the morning. But by morning, her condition was so grave that I just knew...just knew, it was her end. Gerdie had to be euthanized. The rat poision's effect was too far advanced. Gerdie had gross swelling of her extremeties, a bloody snout & rectum ( black vomit was all over the floor), internal bleeding, and her organs began failing. Gerdie was euthanized on the morning of 08/15. My husband carried her home back home to bury her in our yard. I had sewn a beautiful cushioned pillow bed for her. It had pretty pink and lavender flowers sprinkled on a gorgeous fabric, stuffed with batting on sides and a large head piece pillow for her sweet, sad face. Sheer ribbon flowers were decorated in each corner of her bed, and a large sheer ribbon bow was placed gently around her neck. Gerdie was placed in a comfortable position, as if she were asleep, and then buried aside with Boop Boop. Please forgive me Gerdie for not giving every ounce of attention you craved. I am so tortured with guilt and sadness. Dirty Gerdie please, always, always remember I love you very much and never expected anyone would be so evil to poison such a wonderful, loving friendly girl. I am sorry.
