Arrival Story:
Saw an ad in the paper for a shepherd and called because I was looking for a dog to train as my service dog. I think Roxy was abused and never allowed in the house so it took quite some time before she would trust me. Also she did not know any English so we had to learn how to communicate.

I'm making friends for us, Mom.

My friend Holly told me all about this neat web site her Mom found. We don't have a computer so my Mom's friend looked it up for us. She was on the phone with Mom for over an hour telling her about all the neat dogs on the site. She told my Mom, the next time she went shopping that Mom haaaaad to buy a computer so Mom put that on her list of things to do.

In the mean time, Mom's friend set us up in that wonderful land of Dogster. We are both so excited. Mom is 72 and is disabled. She doesn't walk and uses a scooter to get around. Mom has always had dogs and about a week after her last dog passed away, Mom said, "That is it". "I need another dog". So she looked in the paper and read about my family wanting to get rid of me. Personally, I don't think they wanted me in the first place because they never let me in the house and were kind of mean to me.

Anyway, Mom called and had them bring me over. Right then and there she decided that I was a keeper. She is such a great Mom. My manners were so bad. I didn't even understand English. But my Mom is a trooper. She put me in obedience class - hate to admit it but I needed three!!!

In the back of Mom's mind, she was thinking... service dog. Certainly wasn't in my thoughts! Mom called a school real close by that teaches people with disabilities how to train THEIR dog to be a service dog. They told Mom to call back when I completed my obedience and they would come out to meet us. Well, by the end of my obedience classes (I know, I know - three of them) I really learned to trust my Mom. I began to feel safe. Wow! What a nice warm feeling it is to be safe. I wish that for the whole world - dogs and people.

Guess Mom and I really impressed the school because they accepted us. I graduated in September of 2003. The evaluators said we were one of the best teams they had seen. They said Mom and I have such a bond and a lot of patience working together. Some of the things I learned are how to pick up anything Mom drops, open plastic containers for her, open and shut doors and even go in the fridge to get her a soda. Most of all both of our social lives have increased more than I could ever put into words.

Now I still go to the classes with Mom and watch the newbies. We also help out with presentations for the school. I thought life couldn't get better then Holly told me about Dogster and here I am!!!

Mom will be writing the next entries once she gets her computer. Meanwhile I will keep in touch through Mom's and my friend who just happens to be the executive director and instructor at the service dog school I went to.

So, thanks Holly. You introduced Mom and I to a whole new world.
