Arrival Story: I had wanted a JRT since I first saw one in the Rocky Mtns of Colorado. I remember asking the person what breed it was and since then, I always thought they were the cutest dogs ever. Then one day, I wanted a "baby" and we went out looking for him/her. We got him through a breeder in Texas and it was love at first sight... he was only 7 weeks old when we got him. He has slept in our bed with us since the very first night.
Bio: I lay my head across my mommys neck or over her head when she sleeps or if she has a migrane. She says it helps her sleep better and helps get rid of the tension from the migraine. I love my mommy very much and I know she loves me sooo very much too! Mommy says I am her very special baby.
Well, a bit has happened since I last wrote. Mom's added some additional supplements to help reduce the inflamation in my hip joints. She read a lot of good reviews on a natural product from Australia called "Dog Gone Pain", or DGP so I've been taking that for a few weeks now. I'm also taking Ester-C which is supposed to help a lot in healing the damage to my hips along with additional MSM. But the greatest part is we've all been eating more of a raw diet lately... lots of fresh organic chicken, beef, fish, veggies, bones and yogurt. Mom says she's amazed with how much we love this kind of food... we wolf it down faster than anything we've eaten before... so she says it must be good, besides, what's better than fresh and natural?? I only take aspirin now when I get to be more active, like this weekend...
It was my daddy's 50th birthday this Friday, so to celebrate we all escaped to The Sea Ranch which is a small peaceful community on Hwy 1 on the Mendocino Coast. We had a lot of fun walking on the trails on the bluffs overlooking the ocean and down by the shore. We were even so lucky to be there during low tide and explored the tide-pools. I was so lost in my little adventure this weekend, I didn't even think about my hips much at all. Or, the supplements are really starting to take effect.... whatever it is, I SURE HAD FUN!!!!! Mommy was sooo happy too because she saw me romping around like I used to and seeing me wide-eyed and happy for a change! Mom now put my doggy bed in the back of the Jeep so I could relax in that while we drive around... I really enjoy that and it gives my hips some much needed relief after all those nice walks.
Well, just wanted to check in and let you know that I'm doing pretty good now. Mom is going to check with a surgeon on a total hip replacement soon, but we'll probably hold off on the actual surgery (whatever it will be) until I get really tired of the pain and well before my leg muscles begin to atrophy. But right now, I'm a happy little doggy again - yaaaaaaaay!!
Hi all... this is my first diary entry and I want to say I am really enjoying making friends here at Dogster and hope to make many more!
Well, I'll just start by saying I am Opie, a 3 1/2 year old handsome Jack Russell Terrier who was born in Arlington Texas. My parents got me through a breeder there and they said it was love at first sight - Mommy wanted a "baby" and then the great day came when she found me and took me home with her and daddy to live with them forever! That was a happy day...
Here's the sad news... yesterday they took me to a new vet to get a full evaluation on something mommy has been worrying about and the doc checked me out good (he was super nice to me and I was happy and wagging my tail) and then took x-rays. They said I was so cooperative, they didn't even need to sedate me for the x-rays. Well, I wasn't in the room when the doctor took the images to my parents, but later they told me that I have a big "boo-boo" on my behind. They said it was something called Hip Dysplasia and that I have had it since birth - a birth defect I suppose. Well, that confirmed my mom's worries about how I "bunny hop" sometimes when I run really fast. I haven't been in much pain because I really am a happy-go-lucky kinda fella, but since a month ago, I have been starting to be a bit cranky and I growled at mommy when she touched my back legs. So, I guess the news is out... I really don't know what it's like to be without this problem because I kind of gradually grew into it but they tell me it could get worse. The good news is there are treatments for it. Mommy has put me on a higher dose of a better Glucosamine/Condroiton/MSM formula called ArthiSoothe-GOLD Hip & Joint Formula with Ester-C by NaturVet and not only are they yummy but they seem to be helping also. She also gives me baby-aspirin 2x a day on my "grumpy days" which I don't really like to take but it does make me feel better too. Fortunately the doc said that I was in remarkably good condition considering the extent of the damage to my hips... so all the good nutritious foods and vitamins and glucosamine mommy and daddy have been giving me since I was a baby must've sure helped! Also, the ladies there at the vet really drooled over me.. haha... they said I was very handsome and they especially went ga-ga over my beard! But then while I was in the examination room, Sugar went out to use the potty and on her way back there was a young black lab mix who I am told she "kissed"... can you imagine??? So when mommy and daddy went to pay the bill, I saw this fella while I was up in mommy's arms and he came up to Sugar and they were getting all smoochy and I of course showed my displeasure and began to growl. The lab's owners began to giggle and said "Ohhh oh, her man is not happy at all about that!"... guess I got my message across... let it be known from this day forward, "SUGAR IS MY GAL!!!"
Well, today was a good day... daddy took me and Sugar swimming in the big pool and was it fun!! Then mommy fed me some raspberry fat-free yogurt and gave me an aspirin... yummy and then I took a nap. I knew mommy was kind of sad about the "news" yesterday but I kept assuring her that I'm no different today than I was yesterday or last week and that everything will be ok... I will always love her, and I know she loves me too. I guess I'm a very lucky guy!
