My mom called and said a cousin had some puppies he was giving away. I told her at the time, I didn't need or want a puppy or even a dog. She insisted for me to at least come and look at how cute they were. I jokingly said, I'll take the mom, but I don't need a puppy. Couple days later, cousin calls and says I can have the mom. And so I aquired Lady, who was an only dog for several years until I started fostering. At which time she was forced to co-exist with the others. She is a natural born alpha, and has taught me a lot about how to communicate with a "pack". I love her, and would've been lost learning how to foster multiple dogs in my home without her.
