My Tail of Devotion for Charlie

when i first saw him at the Santa Monica Shelter, i melted inside. when i brought him home, as he was being housebroken, i had no idea i would be sleepless for a month. when he chased his first leaf or that stray ray of sunshine, i remembered wonder. when his neck caught in a car window and his paws slipped from under him, as i ran to him in those seconds when i thought he'd died, i felt total fear. when his big belly and his little legs came bumbling to me from clear across the park, the first time i called him, i glowed with pride. most of all, the first night together, as he fell asleep in his crate, i put my nose inches away, taking in the puppy breath, the pound-puppy stinkiness, the quiet of his breath, i knew peace.

Charlie makes me be the best person possible, whether i feel like it that day, whether i want to or not. because when his ears pin down his head and the smile breaks across his face -- what else CAN i be?
