Likes: Belly rubs, annoying my brother Chester, communing with Lucy the cat (who looks suspiciously like a squirrel), rawhide bones, playing dead dog to get a belly rub, sleeping on the bed.
Pet-Peeves: The Dog Whisperer--especially his advice about discipline, being told I have flippers for feet, being told my head is too big for my body.
Favorite Toy: My brother, stolen socks
Favorite Food: Meat, meat and more meat! I also like surf and turf.
Favorite Walk: Lake Mohican Dog Park
Best Tricks: I'm a master remodeler--I'm currently working on the moulding in the kitchen. I recently finished taking down the wallpaper in the kitchen. Wasn't exactly my taste.
Arrival Story: Barney came into our lives in a roundabout way. After many years in the Marine Corps, moving often and living in base housing, we finally settled into our own home with a big back yard and decided it was time to add a dog to the family. Our son was 16 and had never had the joy of growing up with a dog as my husband and I both had. We visited our local animal rescue shelter and adopted a beagle mix named Cassie from one of the volunteers who had brought Cassie along to help out that day. She wasn't really looking to adopt Cassie, but she did have her hands full with four dogs at home, and it was love at first sight, so she agreed that it was a good match. Within two hours of joining us, Cassie escaped out our kitchen door and ran across a very busy road into the woods across the street. We spent a very long week pounding the pavement, knocking on doors, calling every shelter within a 50-mile radius and posting lost dog posters. It wasn't until the Connecticut Post newspaper got involved and ran a front-page article on her did we receive several calls from the same neighborhood several miles away to tell us they thought they had spotted Cassie. Sure enough, it was her, and the story had a happy ending. Everyone involved decided it was best if she went back to live with her original owner (who also had Cassie's doggie mom).
After that traumatic experience we weren't sure we were ready to try the whole dog thing again. After contacting a fence company, I looked on the rescue shelter's web site and found the most adorable, goofy looking Basset/Blue Tick Coon hound mix named Colby. My husband remembered seeing him the day we adopted Cassie, but Colby was cowering in the corner of his cage, and my husband was afraid that he might be a fear biter. The pound assured us that once Colby got to know us he would show us his love bug side, and they assured us he was not a "bolter". Colby, whose name we changed to Barney to suit his Bad Hound Self, has truly evolved into a loyal love bug, but it took quite awhile. He was afraid of everyone and everything. He wouldn't come near my husband for six months. Now they are best buddies, and Barney is his shadow. Our son left for college this fall, and I know that Barney stil wonders where his tennis ball throwing, Cap'n Crunch sharing, sleeping 'til noon buddy has gone off to. He will have to content himself until Thanksgiving vacation with bugging his canine brother, Chester, who came to live with us after the rescue shelter called us a month after we adopted Barney to tell us they had Colby's brother, Teddy. Of course we couldn't say no, and the "twins" were reunited in a "Hallmark Moment".

I've Been On Dogster Since:
My human brother is coming home from that place called college tomorrow! I'm so happy I can't contain myself. I can't wait to sleep with him and sit on the floor next to the couch so I can beat my brother, Chester, to all the goodies that get dropped on the floor.
My eejit of a brother got to go to school with mom on Halloween. She dressed up as Cruella DeVil, and Chester went as a Dalmatian disguised as a Blue Tick Coon/Bassett Hound. I didn't go because I'm already smart and don't need to go to school. Chester on the other hand...
So, I got to stay with my dad, and we went to Chicken Rock at the Puppy Park and ate fried chicken and played in the water. We call it Chicken Rock because it's a big rock where we get to eat fried chicken. There was another dog at Chicken Rock that day who wanted my dad to share his fried chicken, but I didn't like that, so I circled the wagons and scared the chicken bully off. More chicken for me.
I didn't even miss my stupid brother, Chester. Really.
My human brother is leaving for college tomorrow. I'm gonna miss the tall, skinny kid. He's always good for some Cap'n Crunch or a Cheddar Goldfish or two. I'm gonna miss being called Barnabeans...When is Thanksgiving? It seems like forever away.
