   Leave a bone for Zelda

Zelda is not really a Bernese Mountain Dog. She is an Appenzell, a Swiss cattle dog related to the Bernese, but smaller and short haired. She is not listed in your list of breeds. We named her after Mrs. Fitzgerald, who was also beautiful.

Doggie Dynamics:
not playfulvery playful

July 24th 1995

Zelda likes tennis balls, kongs, frisbees, sticks, a garden hose, anything she can fetch.

Zelda hates water and liver (none of our dogs ever had these traits before)

Favorite Toy:
She loves to steal other dog's toys. Briar's squeaky hamburger is a winner.

Favorite Food:
Zelda is not very food oriented, but she has a good appetite, and is always willing to lick a plate clean.

Favorite Walk:
At home: Bernal Hill every morning, and Golden Gate Park, the beach, McLaren Park, Glen Park, Stern Grove, Lands End, Fort Funston, Fort Mason, all the parks of SF. On vacation: Sheep Dung Estates is number one.

Best Tricks:
She loves to play fetch with strangers. She loves to play "find the toy" while the humans hide it in the house.

Arrival Story:
We found her at the pound in San Francisco. She was two years old at least. We didn't know what kind of dog she was, until we looked in a book and on the internet, and there she was, an Appenzell, all traits and characteristics perfectly shown. We had already named her Zelda. She had no neuroses, and she knew all the dog commands. When we adopted her, she had to stay at the pound for a few days. Every day we would go and sit in her cage with her, and when people came to see the dogs, we told them they had to take all three of us.

Zelda's first two years are a mystery. her last eight years are wonderful, for her and for us. Our dog Rufus was perfect, Brahma the bulldog was the sweetest, Flaco the dobie was the worst, but we bonded anyway for fourteen years; but Zelda, who is dreaming and wagging up a storm at my side right now, is our love and our joy. May she live in good health for many more years. Update May 11: We found out today Zelda needs surgery for a torn ACL in her left rear leg. Send your doggy prayers her way. Update June 11: Zelda is recovering from her knee surgery. She is doing well and her hair is growing back. We will be on leash for six more weeks. She has been REPAIRED. Update July 24: TODAY IS ZELDA'S BIRTHDAY. Her doctor gave her a clean bill of health on Thursday, so she can run and play again. Hooray! Nov. 6, 2004: Zelda stole Slidel's purple spiny squeek toy this morning, but she gave it back. 2006: They closed Sheep Dung, so no vacation this year! Anyone know of a dog paradise in the country for Zelda's holiday? 2009: Zelda is 14! She is slower, and grayer, but still a great dog.
