Arrival Story:
We got Rowdy from the "pound" when he was about 9 months old. He was a full-blooded yellow Labrador Retriever, who was afraid of loud noises, so we figured out he wasn't a very good hunting dog. "This dog don't hunt" But he was smart, easily trained, and a great dog, and somebody's loss ( or negligence) was my gain!

Rowdy had hip dysplaysia, and every once in a while would fall down and thrash around like a landed fish. I guess that is another reason he was at the pound. We controlled his problem with medication and massage. That worked well for a while, but he loved water, and every time we went camping he would jump into the water to swim. That was OK when we lived in New Mexico, where the water is fairly warm, but when we moved North to WA state, he had hip problems whenever he jumped into the water. He also found out about slug bait the hard way in WA. We lived out in the country there, and one day I came home from work and let him out to run. Evidentally, he visited the neighbors garden, because when he came home he was retching and gagging. I thought he had something stuck in his throat, and I tried to get him to cough it up by using the Heimlich maneuver on him. That didn't work, so I stuck my hand down his throat, and he barfed up some nasty stuff. We took him immediately to the vet, which was a half-hour drive away. He was convulsing in the car. When we got to the vet, they did tests, and decided he had been poisoned by slug bait. The vet told me I may have saved his life by causing him to vomit up the poison by sticking my hand down his throat. Rowdy lived for 14 years, and in the end was striken by spinal arthritis and cancer. He went to the Rainbow Bridge in May 2003. He was a wonderful friend and companion, and I know he's waiting for me at the Bridge with a stick in his mouth!
