Got Molly from a breeder when she was 6 weeks old. She was my husbands first dog ever. Molly was with us when we moved to our first house, when we got engaged and when we got married.

Bio:
Molly B'Golly passed away at the tender age of 2 and a half due to bloat (where the stomach twists). I was brushing Molly in the kitchen when she tried to escape. I grabbed her collar to keep her near me when she slipped on the tile. She began not using her right rear leg. We took her to the vet, and after x-rays, it was determinded that she had completely torn her ACL (she had a partial tear in that leg previously). She was put on Deramaxx to see if it helped the swelling and/or pain. My husband and I knew she would probably had to have surgery, so we were ready for that. After being on Deramaxx for 1 day, Molly began vomiting. I immediately took for off the Deramaxx figuring she had some sensitivity to it. I work at an animal hospital so I didn't feed her that night so her stomach could rest. That night she was still vomiting. We got up at least 3 times during the night to clean up the kitchen. At around 2 or 3 am, we heard a very loud yelp from her. We rushed downstairs to see what was wrong and she was just laying in her cage like nothing happened. Molly vomited again in the morning, so I took her to the animal hospital. She also became extremely lethargic, to the point where she would not even wag her tail (come on, she's a Lab, their tails never stop!) or lift her head. Two doctors examined her. They both felt her belly and she showed no pain. She was given some subcutaneous fluids due to a little dehydration from the vomiting. We were also sent home on a medicine that would help stop the vomiting. She was given some that morning and had not vomited since, so the let us go home. Once we got home, Molly was still very lethargic, but I was confident because the doctors had examined her. I let her lay on the cool tile in the kitchen on her favorite blanket. I tried everything to get her to drink, ice cubes, highly diluted boullion in water, water in my hand. I went upstairs with the other dog to let Molly have some quiet. I came down about a half hour later and I thought her gums looked bluish. It was January in Illinois, so I turned the heat up thinking she was just cold. I checked on her about 15 minutes later and I heard her almost choking or trying to vomit. There was a large amount of saliva coming out of her mouth. I begain freaking out, I actually thought I was in a dream. I didn't know what was going on with Molly. I check for a heart beat and there was a weak one. I called my neighbor to have her help me get Molly in the car so I could take her to the ER vet. As she was headed over, I lost Molly's heartbeat. I quickly called the local ER vet to talk me through CPR. I began as best I knew how. She walked me through CPR. I remember the technician asking me if there was a heartbeat yet and I said no, and she said I'm sorry, I think she's gone. I hung up and immediately started screaming. How could this have happened? Three days ago, she was her happy Lab self. Molly died at 10:05 pm on January 19, 2005. I called my husband who was on his way home and told him the horrible news about his baby girl. He was devastated. I hope Molly knew I was there with her until her last breath. My baby girl died in my arms. A later necropcy (an animal autopsy) revealed that she had had the bloat for almost 24 hours when she passed away. We hypothesis that the yelp we heard at 2-3am was her stomach untwisting and possibly retwisting. Her stomach had twisted so bad that it shut off blood to her organs and her stomach eventually ruptured causing stomach acid to leak into her body cavitiy killing her. Our lives were enriched because of the short time she was with us. But I will never get over the guilt of what happened to our baby girl.
