Leave a bone for Basil

Nicknames: Bazoh, Baz, Moochie, Pooder, Moochinator, Smoochie.

Quick Bio:
Likes: Being pet by people with both hands; climbing into people's laps for petting; watching/chasing squirrels; becoming like a monk in a Zen state watching up a tree; sitting on the balcony, just watching; going to Camp Echo for a weekend and running free.

Pet-Peeves: When people leave he's sad; having his feet trimmed of excess fur; not getting through an almost closed door because he's too scared to have it touch him by pushing it open; puppies who jump at him; thunder (which makes him very "needy").

Favorite Toy: Doesn't play with toys much, but loves his molecuball and Buster Cube stuffed with treats; sometimes will chase a ball or a stuffed toy with a squeeker, but generally will do this only after coming in from a walk; he loves to rip stuffed toys apart.

Favorite Food: He'll eat almost anything; loves cheese; loves dried liver treats; loves raw-hide; rice; pasta.

Favorite Walk: Anywhere with squirrels and/or rabbits; to the dog beach; running by the lake; walking by people who have treats in their pockets.

Best Tricks: Paw...other paw.

Arrival Story: A friend was in a vet's office in Rhinelander, WI during the winter with her dog Willie when someone came in with a young dog found at the side of the road with frozen paws (now all four paws grow lots of fur, maybe to protect his paws). My friend adopted him the next day, took him home, and named him Bo Bo Bear. After six months, she decided it was too hard to have two dogs, so I asked if my son and I could have him. Best guess was that he was about a year old at the time. She gave him to us and I changed his name, although it took me a while to find a B-name substitute. Basil really seemed to suit him, and it's my dad's name, so if Basil needs correcting, I get to say, "No, Basil." He'll be ten in July and is going strong.

Bio: Right after he came to live with us, I noticed a small white spot on one of the pads of his rear right foot. It spread to other pads and became oozie. After two weeks of watching and cleaning the foot, it got worse and worse and the vet did a biopsy. Results came back positive for Blastomycosis which is picked up in the airways of animals and humans from certain spores in the woods. Long story short, he almost lost his back foot when all of the pads, fur, and nails disappeared and were taken over by icky pink tissue. After lots of care, antibiotics, soaking in epsom salts, and rewrapping every two days, his foot came back and he's been great for 8 years.
