He knows "let's go," and "come here." But he wishes he knew more.
Mitchell was running along the river up in the mountains, miles from a house. He was covered in ticks, skinny, muddy, and willing to eat anything. We don't really have space for a dog, so we tried to keep driving, but he ran after us - for two miles, up a mountain, at 15 mph - with one ear up and one ear down and his toungue flapping in the wind, and we couldn't drive away.
He had never been in a car or indoors, but he's learned to like both.
He's really a great dog, but our five indoor cats and free-roaming rabbit really hope we find him an excellent home soon.
MITCHELL FOUND A FOREVER HOME! He's got a great family with a beautiful dog-brother who loves him already.
Thank you, Dogster friends, for all your help and your good wishes.
Mitchell is very energetic and very intelligent, which means he has the makings of a fantastic dog for someone with the time, energy and space to train him and wear him out. He would love another dog to run with. He learns commands pretty quickly and is very eager to figure things out.
He's still young enough to chew on things, so he'll need some patience and safe chew toys for a bit yet. He's learning that the Kong is OK but the porch and my socks are not.
He loves being a house dog, and will sit in the living room with us and happily throw his toys around for hours.
Even at the vet, Michell has never shown any aggressive tendencies. Although he tries to herd the cats, which they don't appreciate, he's never tried to hunt them or hurt them.
Mitchell is about 50 pounds. He's had all the vaccines he'll need for this year. He tested negative for heartworm disease, but since he was a stray, he'll need another test in 6 months. He is neutered and has a microchip.
If you're interested in meeting Mitchell, we'll send you our adoption application. If you would like to meet him, let us know and we'll arrange some dog-time.
Are you my family?

Mom discovered I liked ice cubes! Finally! She didn't know what I was missing.
Otherwise, just another week in Carrboro. I ate some more porch railings, went to farmer's market, went to the dog park, all that. I met a couple of really nice people who loved me but were all responsible and realized they couldn't take me because of their other pets, or their jobs, and things like that.
Mom said to just hang on, though, because the right people are out there. People who will say things to me other than "Mitchell? Are you chasing the bunny? Mitchell, don't chase the cats!" I'm getting really good at going and lying on the blanket when she tells me to. But, I'm telling you, if you haven't chased a bunny lately, you should try it! It's really fun!
Mom also said her grad school starts again next week and she's gonna have less time at home. I'm not sure what that means exactly. She said something about lots of people in one place, which sounds really fun to me, but I don't think she's gonna let me go.

Mitchell met his third prospective owner yesterday. He's met a young couple who weren't looking for such an active dog and a family with a very young daughter who fell over when the dog sniffed her and got scared when he tried to play. This weekend, though, Mitchell met a great family with a huge fenced yard who wanted to run with him and play with him and take him to the beach and to a horse farm. They even had two other dogs! The catch - the two older dogs are middle-aged ladies who wanted no part of a rambunctious playboy. So after a one-night sleepover in Mitchell-heaven, the big dog is back a the little house. The cats are all gathered on top of the bookcases, looking pissed, the bunny is behind the washing machine, and Mitchell is still looking for that elusive family.
