Arrival Story:
I found Ripley in a dumpster behind the clinic where I work. I intended to take her to a no-kill animal shelter in the area, but after scrubbing her down and feeding her, I just couldn't bear to get rid of her. She made herself quite at home and obviously had no intentions of leaving any time soon.

Bio:
Ripley was rather intelligent, had a very warm personality, and calm demeanor. I hoped one day to have her trained as a therapy dog. However, on December 9th, Ripley was struck by a car and suffered a compression fracture of the L3 vertebra. Although her other injuries were minor in comparison, she'd lost the function of her hindlegs and tail. Our goal shifted from training to learning how to walk again when it was safe to use a paraplegic sling cart. She was released with high hopes from the hospital on December 13th and quietly died at home, surrounded by the people who loved her the most, on December 16th.

It's been a year, now. I miss my big, dumb blonde.

Ripley died at 10:20 PM EST. It was quick and painless, I think. I stepped away from her crib for a few minutes and returned to find her gasping for air. We did what we could to resuscitate her, but I had to decide to stop when I lost her heartbeat. The vet who was on call the night we first rushed her to ER was there when we brought her in to arrange for her cremation and she came over to speak with us. She's interested in the fact that the vet who saw her earlier in the ER wrote down kennel cough as the diagnosis and didn't document the other concerns we had. Right now I just want to clean up all these things we have strewn around.

From Better to Worse

Ripley came home Monday evening, but she's taken a decline since then. She has pneumonia and a UTI now. She's up to five medications a day and we're beginning to question her quality of life. Not that we expected this to be easy or for everything to be fine when she came out of the hospital, but she's in a great deal of pain and discomfort. This isn't what I want for my most beautiful girl.
