My Diary

It's been a while!

Well, it's been a while, but I'm a year old now! I will have been living with mom and dad for a year in May. I can't believe how time flies - or how big I've gotten. I weigh about 70 pounds (maybe more) and my shouldar is up to my mom's thigh. My dad always calls me a "horse" but that's silly because I'm a dog.

I go to daycare on Wednesdays, but I have to go in the timeout room when closing time comes around until mom picks me up, because I love it there so much I try to keep the other dogs from leaving!

I experienced my first snow this winter and can I just say, I love the stuff! I love to go jump around the backyard and catch the snowballs mom throws for me. I always come in covered in snow and cold, but ready to go back out five minutes later. Mom tried to get me some boots so my feet would stay warm, but I kept kicking them off. I don't need boots!

I also love to sneak up on the couches where I'm technically not allowed. My favorite thing to do is to steal mom's space when she gets up. Then I pretend like I'm sleeping in hopes she'll let me stay there. But she never does.

My aunt Kimber watches me when my mom and dad go out of town, and I love her almost as much as mom. She lets me sleep in the guest bed with her...or actually, that's MY bed, so I guess I'm the one letting HER sleep with ME! I like that because I don't get to sleep in mom and dad's new bed.

I can't wait for summer when I can start going to the dog park again!

Two Rivers, Take Two

My mom's cousin Samar said she thinks it's silly the way I write these diary entries and not my mom, but it's MY page and it took me a long time to learn to type and spell!

I went to Two Rivers again Sunday with mom and her whole family. Her parents brought their grumpy old dog Shiloh and I kept trying to play with her but she would have none of it.

I swam in the river a bit but it was kind of rainy and cold. In fact the entire picnic was kind of rainy and cold but it was still fun. I got to eat some hot dogs and play with everyone there. Samar took me on a great walk where I saw some horese and really didn't know what to think of them. Samar was out of town most of the summer so it was fun to see her again.

After the picnic we wen't to mom's grandma's house for cake and ice cream (it's mom's birthday on Thursday). That was pretty fun, I love running up and down the stairs to the attic over and over. And everyone let me lick their plates clean, too...I love ice cream!

Mom's back!

Well, mom came back from Toronto, and I was really glad to see her...even if she didn't bring me anything! I was a little sad to leave the sitter's because there were a lot of other dogs there for me to play with, but BOY was I glad to get to sleep on a bed again! I made myself comfortable right away and stretched out as much as I could...I don't know why Mom was grumbling at me, I left her at least a foot of space. Mom keeps rubbing my ears and saying how much she missed me...well, DUH. I am the best dog ever, of course she would!

Mom's gone!

Mom has been out of town since Monday, and I'm at the pet sitters. Mom is really worried about me, hoping I'm having fun! I'm pretty sure she misses me a lot and can't wait to see me on Friday. But this guy who's watching me has lots of other dogs around and great treats, so it's not all bad!

Playgroups

My mom has figured out a way for me to be able to socialize with other dogs almost every day of the week! Mondays I have obedience class, Tuesdays is the Scary Acres playgroup, Wednesday I go to B one Jour Day Care, and Thursdays and Sundays is Scary Acres! And any time I miss those I can go to the dog park at Heffliger Park on 111th and Maples. I LOVE playing with other dogs! There's one Boxer named Cassie at the Scary Acres playgroup who I think has a crush on me. I don't really like her, but she follows me around everywhere and I think she'd do anything to get me to play with her. She's alright, but I'd much rather play with that Great Dane named Memphis. But I can't wait to meet Lacey Lou someday. Mom says I'd better like her!

Went swimming in the river!

After seeing how much I loved my pool, mom decided to take me to the river to swim. I LOVED it. There was a dead tree in the middle that I loved climbing onto, then jumping off of! She kept laughing at me because I'd be walking along, the bam, the bottom would drop out and I'd have to swim. It was the first time she'd seen me swim and I was awesome at it!

I left a little sandy, but completely happy and wiped out.

Doggy Luau

Yesterday, mom and her cousin Ayah (my second favorite person in the world) took me to the doggy luau at my dog daycare center. It was a blast! I won the wet t-shirt contest and also got my paw print made. I even got a lei to wear! I had so much fun swimming in the pools, chasing my pal Howie the American Bulldog, and most of all, eating and eating and eating. I ate so much my mom was scared I'd get a tummyache and keep her up all night with some stinky gas. Which I did! I think it's funny. I'm an expert at the SBDs - silent but deadlies! I was even on the news that night! I'm on my way to being a star!!!!!

Pool time!

Because of the super duper hot humid weather we've been having here, my mom has been wondering lately if I'm at all a water dog. The one time she had me in water was in the bathtub when I got really muddy, and I hated it. But who wouldn't? It was slippery and I kept getting soap in my eyes.

She took me to the lake to see what I would think, and I went up to my knees in the water. But she was too grossed out by all the foam and algae to let me go further or go in with me. So later that day, she got me my own pool!

It's just a plastic pool that holds a few inches of water, but I had so much fun playing in it last night. I was a little timid at first, but in no time I was splashing and jumping around. It will be great to cool off in after walks during these hot summer months. I just wish she'd gotten it earlier!

Obedience Class

Yesterday I started my second round of obedience classes at the local humane society. I finished by first one about three weeks ago, and loved it! I had a great friend named Daisy who was a huge St. Bernard puppy. We played every class and sometimes ignored the lessons in favor of trying to get to each other (even though our owners were very mean and wouldn't let us go!). I learned to sit, stay, and go down there. I didn't get to go to the first lesson yesterday, because it was just a lecture for my mom, but I can't wait til next Monday! I heard there are two other dogs named Riley in the class of seven dogs. What a great name! I hope I make lots of friends there.

I have another obedience class on the weekends through the local community college, but I don't like that one as much. I'm one of the smallest dogs there, and we don't get any play time. Plus the floor is weird and slippery and I can't keep my feet under me! Once my mom "popped" my leash to get me to come, and I went flying across the floor on my butt! Next Saturday is my last class there and my mom doesn't think we'll be going to that one again.

My Tail of Devotion for Riley

Riley,

I've wanted a dog for a long, long time. When I finally saw you for the first time, I knew there was no turning back. I tried to not fall madly in love with you at first sight in case your dad said no to a puppy, but it was too late. You completely stole my heart and do so more every day. I can't believe how much I love someone that's only been in my life for a few months, but already I can't imagine life without you. You are constantly making me laugh, and every day you surprise me with something new you've learned. I love that you let me cuddle and kiss you for as long as you possibly can stand before wiggling out of my arms. I love your bounding leaps as you chase toys, and the way you pretend not to hear me as I call you to come inside when you're playing in the rain. I love the way you lift your paw up and clumsily set it on something you want and the way you are so excited to see me no matter how long I've been gone, even if I just stepped out to get the mail. I even love the way you park yourself outside the bathroom door when I'm taking a shower or going to the bathroom.

It's been amazing watching you grow and begin to learn to control yourself - even though I can see you want to jump on me when I walk in the door you manage to sit so I can pet you. You've learned to heel, sit, go down, stay, and shake in just a matter of weeks, and you know how to come even if you don't always want to!

I love getting new toys and treats for you, and you're spoiled rotten! You've made me terrified for the time when I have kids - if I spoil my dog this much, how much will they be spoiled??

I hope you know how much I adore you and I can't wait to share the next ten or fifteen years with you!

Love,
Me
