He loved playing with and protecting his Sable.
Chicken wire reinforcements on the fences!
Tristan was a tri-color collie (the one on the left in the pic) who was 3 years my senior and one of my two 'guardians' growing up. He was loving, huge, intelligent and did I mention huge?
Even though my life was not usually threatened, he always guarded and protected me from situations he saw as dangerous - like my uncle playing rough with me when I was 4 or 5 - Tristan came up, got up on his hind legs and knocked him right over. He also stood in front of Sable whenever she did something wrong to protect her from any type of punishment.
In 1993, at age 13 on a late January night, my parents let the dogs out to do their business - dogs who never ever left the yard. At this point Sable was deaf and depended on Tristan to get her and lead her when it was time to go in. They were outside for about 10 minutes - when my parents returned to call them in, Tristan was gone. Living in a tight-knit, rural-ish neighborhood, all of the neighbors were out half the night with their flashlights searching yards, woods, you name it. The next day 'lost' posters went up and my mom visited every shelter in the area for six months. We never saw Tristan again and his disappearance remains extremely peculiar and unlike him - especially to leave his beloved Sable alone. She grieved his disappearance to the point where she began starving herself and we had no choice but to put her to sleep. I'd like to think they are enjoying each other's company now...
