Arrival Story: I was looking for a male pomchi and saw him on a website, well, I had to have him so I flew to Georgia and brought him home to Oregon (flew in a carrier w/me). I don't think the breeder was a very good one, because he had worms so bad it caused a severe intestinal infection. With much medication and lots of TLC and time, he came out of it just fine. He's very happy, now! He's such a good boy, very loving, timid, a bit shy, HUGE heart and he is really good natured.
Bio: Monty's mom was a registered pomeranian, though I have my doubts; breeder could never produce any papers... His dad was a registered chihuahua. I recently saw pics of Volpino Italiano and Monty looks just like one. I knew he had something else in him...
He's had 3 surgeries on his back legs due to a genetic defect in his knees. Monty was diagnosed with IMHA (see his diary entries for updates). It is now in remission!!
Immune-mediate hemolytic anemia (IMHA) is the most common cause of hemolytic anemia in dog. Affected dogs show signs of weakness, lethargy, exercise intolerance and anorexia. This deadly blood disorder occurs when something triggers the dog's body to attack its own red blood cells. Despite aggressive immunosuppressive therapy, this disease has a very high mortality rate. Most dogs die shortly after diagnosis, so an effective early treatment is critical.
I'm doing so good these days! I do have to go in soon for an x-ray on my leg and back, but I'm sure it will be ok. I just found out that Lucy Lu is going to be staying with us for a while. Should be interesting... I do like her very much.
Mom took me to the vet the other day because I had been hacking and coughing every time Alfie and I would play or when I got excited about anything. I have a collapsed trachea and am now taking medication for that. The vet wants to start easing me off to see how I do, so we'll see. Mom also talked with the vet about my left knee; that I'm walking with a bit of a limp now and seem to be in a little distress after a walk or playing with Alfie. The vet told her that he doesn't want to do surgery because it hasn't been that long since I've been off the prednisone for IMHA. He wants to give it a year to see how I do before he considers doing the surgery. I really have been unlucky in the whole gene pool thing... but I love my family, especially my mom. I follow her everywhere and if she isn't feeling good some days I just hunker down next to her. She calls me her sweet Monty boyfriend and helps me when I can't jump down or up because of my bad knee. Other than that, I'm fine and in good spirits. Hope all is good with all my furiends here!
Mom has been out in the yard ALL THE TIME building something, so I go out with her. That's why I haven't been on Dogster for a while... So, here I am and doing great still! Mom is still checking my gums everyday and watching me very closely. Alfie and I have become great friends, we play together all the time! I really do like the little guy... Mom and Dad were talking about possibly adopting him; that would be COOL! I think about all of you often, especially those of you that supported me through my IMHA. I love you guys! I'll be back on with Mom so she can help send some rosettes to each of you, just to let you guys know you're all WONDERFUL! Bye for now my friends.
