Duchessy Dog Girl

Doggie Dynamics:
not playfulvery playful

Quick Bio:
-mutt-pound dog-dog rescue

March 4th 2002

Getting scraps, sleeping in my bed, playing fetch (although she makes me pry the toy out of her mouth), "speaking," riding in the car

When Sir Thomas (the cat) tries to lie right next to her. That's her only pet peeve, but she has tons of phobias. She's terrified of the garage, lawn mowers, her water bowl, strangers, the vet, and she absolutely loathes the UPS and FedEx trucks.

Favorite Toy:
She loves her rubber squeaky football

Favorite Food:
Cat food (when she is sneaky enough to eat it unnoticed). She'll eat pretty much anything but loves moist dogfood and scraps.

Favorite Walk:
through the neighborhood, where she can explore and see the other dogs.

Best Tricks:
She can sit, stay (though it takes awhile for her to do that one), shake hands, speak, and lie down. Also, when she's in the house, if the TV is turned off, she automatically gets up (even from the deepest sleep) and goes to my bedroom.

Arrival Story:
I was volunteering at the animal shelter in Statesboro (bad idea). Since it isn't a no kill shelter, it's incredibly difficult to volunteer there without having an extremely intense desire to adopt an animal or two (in my case, two). I adopted my cat, Luna, from the pound September 26, 2002, and I adopted Duchess September 28, 2002. I had to get her because her name at the pound was Heather, just like me, and she was in kennel number 18, the same day as my birthday. Also, she wasn't afraid of me in the least. Plus, she is part lab, a breed my dad adores. Even though he wasn't too happy when I brought her home (actually, he didn't talk to me or my Mom for 3 weeks because I brought her home and because Mom told me she could stay), he adores her now. He didn't like her at first because she's not a purebred, but once he got to know her, that didn't matter. As for me, I don't pick animals based on their breed, I pick them based on their need for a home and their compatibility with me and my other pets. Why buy a purebred for hundreds of dollars when there are millions of unwanted (some purebred) doggies waiting for homes in animal shelters?

Duchess was originally owned by some college students who apparently got caught with her in their apartment, which didn't allow pets. I don't know what kind of trauma she was exposed to there, but ever since I adopted her she has been very nervous and is terrified of strangers and her water bowl. And the garage. That one I don't get. She is a very loving dog though, and although she's not the brightest crayon in the box, she has a wonderful personality. She is a very loving, affectionate dog who will do anything to please me. She is always trying to learn new tricks to make me happy, even though I couldn't care less if she couldn't follow a single command! I love Duchess and I am so glad I adopted her. She was originally a birthday present for my Dad (even though I knew he didn't really want a dog--it was an excuse for me to adopt her), but ever since I took her home, it was apparent that she is mine. She follows me everywhere I go and she loves to go for car rides with me. She has an underground fence because she has no car sense whatsoever. If the power goes out and she escapes, the only way to get her back is to drive to where she is, open the door, and call her! If you simply call her, she runs the opposite direction like it's a game of tag! But once invited into that car, she can't resist going for a ride! She is my baby and I love her to death!!

Home Alone

Looks like tomorrow I will be home alone. Not just tomorrow. Saturday and half of Sunday too! This is very distressing. Mom is away at college; I might have to ask her to come home and take care of me while Grandmaw and Grandpaw are out of town! I like attention. The neighbor is supposed to come over once a day to check up on me, but I want Mom to come home and watch over me! Then I will get to sleep in her bedroom instead of outside in the garage. *sigh* What's a dog to do? I wish I could call her and ask her to come home. I heard her talking on the phone with Grandmaw earlier and I heard Grandmaw say that she could come home if she wants to. Maybe she will!

Even though I don't live with Mom right now, she still considers me her dog. That's why she is going to look for a more nutritious food for me. Maybe it will help me to stop shedding and itching/scratching so much if I eat a better food. I know that's what happened when my cat-siblings got switched over to a high quality food! I hope the same will be true for me! I can't wait until Mom picks out my new food and then I get to taste-test it! Some pups have given us some great advice on the Forums. I love the Forums. There are some very smart doggies/owners out there in the world of Dogster (same is true for the world of Catster)! I have learned so much.

I love Dogster! I'm glad Mom is finally letting me spend some time here instead of devoting all the 'puter time to Catster! I've even made some new friends!

I'm one happy pup!

I have a secret. I just have to share it with you!

I like cats. Even Sir Thomas. I have Mommy fooled--if you look at my Pet Peeves, it says that Sir Thomas is one of them!! Well, friends, he isn't. But that's just between me and you. Mommy can't know because I don't want her to know what a cat-lover I am!!

Sir Thomas, Mom thinks, is my least favorite of all the felines. He thinks I am his personal plaything, and he always tries to lay down next to me on my bed in the house. He constantly licks me and head-butts me. I pretend to hate this behavior...I move away from him and give Mom my "puppy-dog face." But then, when no one is looking, I move right next to Sir Thomas and take a nap with him!! He is really my bestest friend in the world!

Shhhh....don't tell Mom.

Hi Furfriends,
Well it's been a while since I updated my diary, so I thought I'd bark an entry tonight! Today, I was minding my own business on my blanket in the house, when out of nowhere, I felt a sandpaper lick on my ear!! It was Dutch! He was trying to clean my ears out! Although it felt kind of nice, I had to tell him to leave me alone because I am a dog, and I do not like to have the insides of my ears licked!!
Mommy is coming home tomorrow--Grandpaw told me earlier. I am so excited!! I haven't seen her since Sunday, and I have missed sleeping in bed with her all week!
