 Quick Bio:
Likes: Food--any kind any time any place

Pet-Peeves: Anyone bothering his sister, Norma

Favorite Toy: Mallard duck stuffed toy--or anything birdlike that he can carry

Favorite Food: Anything but Chicken Livers

Favorite Walk: To the pond at The Other Place

Best Tricks: Triple reverse spinny move with flying Canadian finish, faking out his sister that there's someone at the door in order to snatch her food/bone/cookie

Arrival Story: At the sidewalk adoption for the Milo Foundation, I had selected Norma, and Joe said we couldn't just get one dog because it would be lonely. Someone asked "is that a yellow lab coming out of the van?" and I capitalized on Joe's affinity for labs and drew his attention to Lucas emerging. Lucas was leashed to a big plant pot and pee'd on it immediately. From then on, Joe would not let go of the leash until I had him in the car and on the way home.

Bio: Lucas was a stray who had been abandoned in Ukiah. He was rescued from the Ukiah Animal Control shelter the day before he was to be destroyed, 9/30/99. He had been living on the road without a collar for some time. He was most likely abandoned due to some minor bad habits which have all but subsided now. He lies about his age and has bilateral hip dysplasia and a pellet lodged in his back...both of which don't deter him one bit. Lucas is a loving protector and quite the comical jokester. He loves tricking Norma into thinking there is someone outside by barking so that he can run back and eat her food or snatch her bone. Lucas has learned to trust again and is completely a lab of luxury. Lucas and his sister Norma have been on TV in the show that Mark Curry had on Animal Planet, and more recently on "The Dog Whisperer: Duke & Lulu, and Sparky." (see link in diary)
Lucas is the tail model that is used to describe a dog's state of confidence throughout the first episode segment, and gets a nice peel-away close up at the end of that part. The primary photo of Lucas was taken by the world-famous photographer, Amanda Jones.
Lucas reached the end of his time with all of us on September 11, 2009. His last days were spent on vacation in a house atop a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Carmel Valley surrounded by his loving family, and protecting us all to the end. Vacations were his favorite thing (next to eating and drinking). He left a tremendous hole in all of our hearts and thousands of happy memories as his very being touched every single aspect of our lives, and he had a profound and joyful effect on everyone he met throughout his life. Lucas was a grand protector, comforter, comedian, and companion, and lived every moment of his life in the complete present. He taught all of us many things. He will be missed beyond belief.

Forums Motto: Listen, you. Just hand over the food!
