Arrival Story:
When my boyfriend and I broke up, I was brokenhearted because I missed his dachshund. I spent a few months looking at local shelters and rescues for a doxie of my own, but it wasn't until I was visiting my parents in Kentucky that I found Lilly Rose at a county pound. She was not yet available for adoption--first she had to be evaluated to make sure she wasn't agressive. Also, other people had expressed interest in her so even after she was available for adoption, I'd have to wait to allow other people to put in their applications. The shelter would then decide on the most suitable home for her. As soon as I found out Lilly had passed her evaluation and was available for adoption, I rushed back to the shelter to fill out an application. I tried not to get my hopes up, knowing that I may not get her. Once I turned my application in, the woman at the desk looked at it with surprise. It turned out that she had the exact same name as me, first and last. "Well," she said, "I'm going to have to let you adopt her then. Let me talk to the director." My mother and I took Lilly out in the yard to see how she'd get along with Boo, my mom's dog. They liked each other immediately and Lilly came right up and sat on my lap. She just wanted to be petted. A few minutes later, the shelter director came out to see us and my mother said, "You don't know how long she's been looking for a little dachshund!" He replied, "You don't have to look anymore." Lilly Rose came home with me the next day. It was meant to be.

Bio:
A few days after having a litter of puppies, poor Lilly was dumped off at the pound alone. We don't know what happened to the puppies...there's just no way they could have survived without their mother at that age. Lilly had worms and kennel cough. She was spayed before I brought her home and a few weeks later had to be put under anesthesia again to have her teeth cleaned. Lilly has now recovered and is completely healthy. She is very timid when it comes to people other than her momma but once she does decide she likes you, she'll gladly sit in your lap forever. She almost never misbehaves, except for peeing in the house. That's only when she's mad that her sister is being an attention hog though.

It's my birthday!

Well, I don't actually remember my birthday but we are celebrating it today because today is my Gotcha Day! It's been 1 year since Mommy adopted me from the animal shelter! I am so happy I didn't have to spend long at the shelter and that Mommy came and brought me home! I was feeling awful when I was at the shelter because the man who "owned" me before didn't take good care of me. Mommy made sure I got all better and now you'd never know how sick I was. I don't like people much because they weren't very nice to me in the past, but I love my mommy because she takes such good care of me. I know she loves me a lot. She says I'm her little angel.

the doxie benefit

Yesterday was so exhausting. First we went to a doggie play group at the Pet Play Place. We go there every month...mom knows I hate it but she doesn't want to leave me at home by myself so I have to go too.

Later on we went to a benefit for DREAM, a dachshund rescue. All of the dogs there were doxies so I felt more comfortable. Most of the time I hid around mom's legs, but I did venture out to see the other doggies every once in a while. I like it much better when there aren't any big dogs around. I wasn't the most timid weenie there, though, so I didn't feel too bad.

the typical dachshund personality

I don't write in my diary as much as Izzie does. That's because I prefer things quiet. I'm not as adventurous as Izzie so I don't have as much to write about. Everyone may think that Izzie has more personality, but I know I'm momma's good girl. Mom knows that I'm her girl and I am always much happier to see her than Izzie is. Sure Izzie gets excited, but usually she's more interested in what mom has in her lunch or grocery bag.

Lately, though, I can't keep myself away from mom's backpack. Mom says there's no food in it, but it smells really good and I always go in it when she's not looking. The other day I got a plastic bag full of band aids out of there. Sometimes I get paper out too. Izzie showed me that eating paper can be fun!

I like Izzie and all, but she needs to understand that I was here first so I'm the boss. That's why whenever she pees somewhere, I have to mark the spot too. Even if I don't have to go potty, I can always manage to squeeze out two drops!

Even though I like things quiet, I'm not a good girl 100% of the time. Mom says I have the typical dachshund personality. I don't like strangers--not one bit. I like to growl and bark at them. I forget that I'm only 12 lbs. I feel like I'm a big, bad watchdog. Don't come near my house or my mommy or I will growl and bark something ferocious! People think I'm so cute and want to pet me, but I won't let them come near me.
