Arrival Story: I'm not a proponent of buying puppies or kittens from pet stores, but whenever I walked into the local one, I always asked to hold one of the puppies that hadn't been held in awhile. But on this particular day, I noticed they had a litter of puppies in two cages, 2 females in one and 2 males in the other. One of the males immediately stood out to me. There was nothing that set him apart physically from his siblings, but there was an expression on his face and just something about him that really stood out to me. I asked the employee if I could hold him. When I had him in my arms, I knew he was meant to be mine and that I wouldn't leave the store without him. After wearing down my husband until he said I could get the puppy, I told the employee I wanted to buy him, but she said he wasn't available! Apparently a woman had come into the store earlier in the day and wanted to buy him but the program they use that allows people to make a monthly payment on dogs didn't accept her application. So she was going to her bank to get something sorted out and was going to be back around noon to pick up the puppy. I was starting to get upset because I knew there was no way I could let this puppy go. The employee went to speak with the manager about it and I followed her. I knew the manager well. When the employee asked her about it, the manager asked if a sign had been hung on the cage about the puppy being on hold. The employee said, "No." The manager shrugged and said, "We have no way of knowing that other woman is coming back, and this woman is a guaranteed sale, so sell her the dog." I was ecstatic! I picked out a new collar for him and got in line at the register. The store was particular busy that day and one of the women in line near me saw the puppy I was holding. She smiled and said she and her husband had noticed him and he was the one they'd wanted to buy. I smiled and looked at the puppy wagging his tail in my arms and told the woman I was buying him. I signed the papers that made him mine and brought him home.

Bio: When Romeo was about a year old, we noticed he was having trouble with his hips, and sometimes he would walk around strangely or yelp in pain. We brought him into a veterinarian for x--rays and it showed he had Legg-Perthes Disease, and as a result of it, arthritis around his hip joints. I was devastated. I was very attached to Romeo and I thought I was going to have to put him to sleep because we couldn't afford the surgery. Then I found out about Care Credit and I filled out the application. I qualified! Romeo had his surgery done and for several months, he didn't use his right hind leg. It felt very cold to the touch and we thought perhaps the limb was "dead." But one day, he started using it again without any problems, and now you'd never know that he was walking around without hip joints. It was through this whole experience that Romeo learned how to walk on just his front legs, something that still amazes people that see it.
