Arrival Story:
Spirit was rescued from a shelter. I was on my way out of town that Friday morning when I got an email from a rescue group about him. He was supposed to be getting neutered on the following Monday. I went by the shelter, fell in love, and said I wouold take him. However, I was informed I had to take him then. They knew nothing about the rescue group, and needed him out! So I called my vet who was out that day. He could see him Saturday morning. I then called my best friend, and asked her "what are best friends for???" She agreed to pick him up the next morning and take him to the vet. Oh, did I mention the shelter was about 50 miles from her home, then another 75 miles to the vet, then 35 miles back to her home??? He freaked at the vet's when his temperature was taken. Everyone assumed it was because he was covered in burrs and had some up his butt!!! So she scheduled his neutering for Tuesday and he said he would remove them while he was under anesthesia. She took him to her home, and put him in the backyard to play. She went to get her mail and low and behold, Spirit was there to greet her! Yes, he pulled 2 boards off her brand new $4000 fence! When I took him in on Tuesday, I asked my vet to take an x-ray of his hips. He said he was sure Spirit was waking funny due to the burrs, but I asked him to just take the picture to ease my mind. When I got to work he called immediately and asked if I was sitting down. He informed me that Spirit's x-ray showed that his entire pelvis was crushed!!! He did not know how he could even stand up, let alone walk, play, and be so loving! He called him "stoic". We didn't know how long he'd had the injury, (obviously a couple of weeks since he supposedly had been in the shelter that long), so the ortho surgeons did not want to do surgery. He has been healing since October and we know down the road he will need bilateral hip replacement surgery, but nothing keeps this guy down! So that is how he got the name "Spirit"!
