Doggie Dynamics:

Quick Bio:
-mutt-pound dog

October 1st 2004

Running, playing with other dogs, being veeerrry close to you, looking after babies, running, swimming, and did I mention running?

Being on a leash!

Favorite Toy:

Favorite Food:
Kolbe eats a Prey Model Raw Diet. She especially loves beef and eggs.

Favorite Walk:
The flats by Como Creek, and in-laws' property

Best Tricks:
Sit, Down, Gimme your paw, Over, Spin, Touch, Leave It

Arrival Story:
Kolbe came from the Tonawanda SPCA after being transported there from Virginia. My fiance (now husband) was depressed because we had been in a long distance relationship for almost a year after he had to move back to his hometown of Buffalo, while I was still finishing school and then working a bit in my hometown of Baltimore. Kolbe really kept him company and kept his spirits up. Now that I'm finally in Buffalo too, we all enjoy each other's company together.

Kolbe has come a long way. She is still shy of new people and a little grumpy around new dogs, but after she's gotten to know you she is your pal for life. 45lb lap dog. Couldn't ask for a more gentle and affectionate dog.

With all of our success with helping Kolbe's dog reactivity I thought it would be a good idea to list some of the books that have really helped us - whether that's a general understanding of dog behavior, or dealing with specific dog-dog related issues.

General Behavior & Understanding

"The Culture Clash" by Jean Donaldson

"Don't Shoot The Dog!" by Karen Pryor

"Canine Body Language" by Brenda Aloff

"On Talking Terms with Dogs: Calming Signals" by Turid Rugaas

General Behavior, Impulse Control & "How To's"

"Control Unleashed" by Leslie McDevitt

"The Power of Positive Training" by Pat Miller

"Before & After Getting your Puppy" by Dr. Ian Dunbar

Dog Reactivity & Aggression

"Fight!" by Jean Donaldson

"Fiesty Fido" by Patricia McConnell

"Click to Calm: Healing the Aggressive Dog" by Emma Parsons

Things these days

Well things are going well. The yard is now fully fenced so Kolbe doesn't have to be tethered for playtime anymore. She loves her brother Guster, and are working on introducing her to some of the neighbors dogs. We are signing up for a "Reactive Rover" class to work on her dog aggression issues with unknown dogs. We practice clicker training and learn new tricks pretty much every day. She discovered the creek near our house and discovered that she really likes swimming. We got her a really long flexi-lead so she can swim but we still have her under control in case she decided to bolt. It's getting cooler out so her seasonal allergies should be subsiding soon. She's getting faster at eating her RMBs too (finally). Things are pretty decent in the land of Kolbe! Now let's just ace this yearly vet exam next month and we're set.

I've been tagged by Mingus and Clover!

Here are the rules:

Each player starts with seven random facts about themselves. Dogs who are tagged, need to post in their Diary the rules & their 7 pawsome facts. Then choose 7 dogs to tag and list their names. Don’t forget to bark them a pmail that they have been tagged and to read your Diary, or, send them a fun Rosette announcing they've been Tagged!

7 Kolbe-licious Facts:

1. I got called a boy a lot when I had my American Flag collar, but now I have a pink polka-dot one and I don't get that as much.

2. I am a little braver than I used to be, but I'm still scared of silly things like waving flags, big statues and strange places.

3. I am not very nice to new doggies when I first meet them and want them away from me! I hated my brother Guster! But after a while, I make friends and then I never forget them. Now I love my brother!

4. I came from the SPCA in Tonawanda, NY, but I was picked up as a stray in Virginia. Nobody wanted me at the shelter there so I was "swapped" to the sister-SPCA in NY to give me a second chance before euthanization! Whew!

5. I am F-A-S-T. Guster and my best friend Willis the Weim can't keep up with me.

6. I have to be tethered when we are all having fun outside because I never got over my "wandering tendancies".

7. I am very affectionate (once I get to know you) and like to mosey over and jam my head right into your side and sit on your leg.

Here's who I've tagged:
1. Kitai
2. Gio
3. Meridian
4. Mocha Bear
5. Magnolia
6. Smoakie
7. Byron
