Arrival Story:
Kolbe came from the Tonawanda SPCA after being transported there from Virginia. We believe she is a Pit Bull/Boxer/Hound mix - although we're not positive...but she does seem to have some physical features from each breed. My fiance was depressed because we had been in a long distance relationship for almost a year after he had to move back to his hometown of Buffalo while I was still finishing school and then working a bit in my hometown of Baltimore. Kolbe really kept him company and kept his spirits up. Now that I'm finally in Buffalo too, we all enjoy each other's company together.

Bio:
She is timid around new people but once she gets to know you she is very friendly, playful and gentle. She is scared of too much action like lots of cars or a lot of strange people (or even large inanimate objects...). Once she knows you, she's your best friend for life. Couldn't ask for a more gentle and affectionate dog.

Things these days

October 23rd 2007 11:04 am   [link to this entry]

Well things are going well. The yard is now fully fenced so Kolbe doesn't have to be tethered for playtime anymore. She loves her brother Guster, and are working on introducing her to some of the neighbors dogs. We are signing up for a "Reactive Rover" class to work on her dog aggression issues with unknown dogs. We practice clicker training and learn new tricks pretty much every day. She discovered the creek near our house and discovered that she really likes swimming. We got her a really long flexi-lead so she can swim but we still have her under control in case she decided to bolt. It's getting cooler out so her seasonal allergies should be subsiding soon. She's getting faster at eating her RMBs too (finally). Things are pretty decent in the land of Kolbe! Now let's just ace this yearly vet exam next month and we're set.

Tagged!

I've been tagged by Mingus and Clover!

Here are the rules:

Each player starts with seven random facts about themselves. Dogs who are tagged, need to post in their Diary the rules & their 7 pawsome facts. Then choose 7 dogs to tag and list their names. Don’t forget to bark them a pmail that they have been tagged and to read your Diary, or, send them a fun Rosette announcing they've been Tagged!

7 Kolbe-licious Facts:

1. I got called a boy a lot when I had my American Flag collar, but now I have a pink polka-dot one and I don't get that as much.

2. I am a little braver than I used to be, but I'm still scared of silly things like waving flags, big statues and strange places.

3. I am not very nice to new doggies when I first meet them and want them away from me! I hated my brother Guster! But after a while, I make friends and then I never forget them. Now I love my brother!

4. I came from the SPCA in Tonawanda, NY, but I was picked up as a stray in Virginia. Nobody wanted me at the shelter there so I was "swapped" to the sister-SPCA in NY to give me a second chance before euthanization! Whew!

5. I am F-A-S-T. Guster and my best friend Willis the Weim can't keep up with me.

6. I have to be tethered when we are all having fun outside because I never got over my "wandering tendancies".

7. I am very affectionate (once I get to know you) and like to mosey over and jam my head right into your side and sit on your leg.

Here's who I've tagged:
1. Kitai
2. Gio
3. Meridian
4. Mocha Bear
5. Magnolia
6. Smoakie
7. Byron

Obedience Class

Well, next Monday is Kolbe's last day of obedience class. She has done pretty well. She is the best at "off", but needs work on her fearfulness in class when we do the "come" exercise. How it works is I give Kolbe's leash to the teacher. I show/lure Kolbe with a treat, and then walk about 30 feet away. Someone sits on the floor in the middle of that distance holding a bag of treats ("the distraction"). I then say, "Kolbe, come," and do the hand signal. She is supposed to run a straight line down the mat to me, where I tell her to sit, then lightly grab her collar while giving her the treat and praising her. Kolbe is very fearful of strangers, even though she sees these people once a week since December. So when the teacher lets go of the leash and I call her, she comes to me - but not in a straight line. She veers away from the distraction person, while nervously glancing at everyone around the room and finally DOES make her way to me - but not how she's supposed to. We've been practicing but I feel like she will be fearful like this for the rest of her life. She HAS improved since the very first time we did it - the first time she simply ran into the corner behind some chairs and everyone in the class went "Awww....poor Kolbe." I am sure she will still graduate but oh how I wish she was just a confident, friendly dog. I'd like to sign her up for the next level but she also growls at dogs she doesn't know, and continues growling at them until she's been hanging around them for a good few hours. She is incredibly great with the Weim and Chi mix that belong to my fiance's brother, but she sees them every day and pretty much lives with them (they live on the 2nd floor and we live on the 3rd). So I dunno. I don't want everyone in the class to be scared for their dog's safety because Kolbe growls at them. :(

Food

I've been getting some PMs about Kolbe's food...I forgot to post an update. Tuns out it WASN'T an allergy to Canidae - actually it turns out it wasn't a food allergy at all. It was airborne - as soon as the weather started getting cold and the leaves started falling, her issues began to dissipate. So she's back on Canidae with her weekly raw egg and her milk thistle pills for her liver and she's doing just fine with it. :D

A New Home

Fiance and I just bought a house of our own. Right now it's in a rennovation phase but when it's liveable, Kolbe finally gets a yard! The fence needs to be re-done but hopefully it will be ready for her by springtime. So she can do what she loves best - RUN. Without fear of her never coming back. :) We are pretty excited.
