Arrival Story: We lost our rescued beagle Libby Loo to lymphatic cancer and were imediately ready to fill the void. Charlie was chosen from those on the BONES (Beagles of the New England States) rescue website [bonesbeagles. org] and came to live with us in Sept 2003 - just a week after we lost Libby Loo.

Bio: Charlie came to BONES rescue from New York where a "cat-rescuer" saw him tied out every day with no sign of care. She approached the owners and was told to take him as he wasn't any good. Charlie is totally blind from early-onset-glucoma. Charlie came to us from a BONES foster home where he had learned the blind dog commands of step-up, step-down, go right, slow, etc. He was met by our family cat who we think immediately recognized that Charlie was totally blind and she had a whole different "meow" system she used to communicate with just him. His beagle sister Elsey Mae (#32367) was in mourning for her sister Libby Loo (#32378) and basically ignored Charlie for the first two months. Charlie is an amazing little guy and as we watch him there are times we forget that he is blind. On his recent visit to his ophthalmologist, it was determined that his eyes must be removed. Charlie is scheduled for surgery on April 30, 2004.
Update May 5: Charlie had only one eye removed on April 30th because of heart complications during surgery. He is recouping very well and is basking in the care of sister Elsey Mae. He will be scheduled to have the other eye removed later this month.
July 1 Update: Charlie has now had both eyes removed and has fully recovered from his surgery... and back to his old self. He's a sweetie!
Aug 05 Update: It's been over a year since Charlie became our "eye-less wonder dog." He is so cute, always looking like he's asleep as the eyes were removed and sockets sewn shut. It's amazing to see him running around the house and fenced yard. We often forget he is blind. His favorite times are spent with his dad off on a fishing trip, picking up food for the food pantry, or just plain hanging out. He is such a spirit!!!!!!

Forums Motto: Who needs eyes anyway!
