Arrival Story:
Pippi came to California with Hop-a-long Animal Rescue of Oakland. She was one of the lucky dogs who not only survived Katrina, but made it out of the mess. She was pregnant when left behind and gave birth sometime between when the storm hit and when she was found three and a half weeks later. None of her pups survived They were perhaps they were what sustained her. Pippi has a long scar down her back , along with a fractured hip that was never set. They said this injury was consistent with dogs who have been dragged behind cars. Whether accidental or intentional, we'll never know. She is also missing a patch of hair the size of a quarter that appears to be from a burn. Her tail is also broken. Pip was a little bag of bones when I picked her up two days before Thanksgiving. And my friend assured me she had actually gained weight !!! She was a mere 22 pounds. Hop-A-Long waited until after the first of the year before allowing their dogs to be adopted. They wanted to give the owners extra time to find their loved ones. Being that Pippi was a backyard breeding bitch, it was highly unlikely anyone would claim her, and they didn't. They let me adopt her the second week of January. Like many of the Katrina survivors, Pippi was heart worm positive. The initial treatment wasn't completed so she had to go through it all over again. The second round was successful and she's now a healthy little girl.
