Saying Goodbye

My Little ray of Sunshine

Yesterday, I found out that my beloved "Happy Dog" Honey has only a short time left here with me. I took Honey to our vet for a check-up and blood test to check on her BUN and creatine levels. During the examination, Dr. Aber remarked on a large mass in Honey's abdomen. The x-ray showed a tumor completely covering her spleen, with a smaller tumor next to it. A splenic tumor can be benign or malignant, but based on the fact that there were two tumors next to each other, the most likely diagnosis is hemangiosarcoma, or cancer of the spleen. This is a very aggressive cancer which metastasizes easily. The outlook would be bleak even if she was not 17 years old. I will not put her through any stressful treatment, but only make our remaining days together memorable. She has been a joy and a ray of sunshine in my life, and I fear that dark days are ahead for me. My most fervent prayer is that she will let me know when it's time for her to join her canine and feline "sibs" already at the Bridge. I know Rowdy is waiting there with a stick in his mouth.
I have loved you for 15 years, Honey, and no matter what, you will always be a little ray of sunshine in my heart.

You are my sunshine, My only sunshine,
You make me happy when skies are gray.
You'll never know, Dear, how much I love you,
Please don't take my sunshine away!

Love,
Mom (Carolyn)
