Sometimes a single moment in time can change your life forever. Adopting our beloved Roxanne was such a moment.
When we first pulled Roxanne from the box filled with her five brothers, the first thing we noticed about her was that she was very timid as she ran and hid under a car when we got the final OK from her, now late, big brother Roscoe. The second, how sweet and gentle she was just by looking into her deep brown eyes and how she hugged her mother the whole way home with us.
It took several years to discover how loyal and strong she was inside. Long after her father had been mauled by a badly parented dog, an event which she watched in horror but was too afraid to act, another pair of loose big black dogs came bounding and snarling right at them. She hesitated for a second as if to run, but, turned, dug her heels into the ground, made a noise that sent shivers up my spine, bared her teeth and growled a growl that said “enough, I am here to fight you to the death, so let’s get it on!” That night she changed forever, her timidity transformed into inner strength and an iron will, but she never lost her sweet and gentle nature.
During her late years she met the trials and tribulations of poor health head on including two types of cancer, with the same determination and strength. She refused to disappoint us by dying. We refused to make her suffer any longer.
She raised and now leaves behind three (two cats and one beagle) of the sweetest and gentlest creatures on the planet, and they will miss her as much as we do. Their unwavering devotion to her in her time of need is a reflection of her heart.
