Arrival Story:
I am fostering this dog for Catahoula Rescue Inc. He was born in Florida and got to me through Operation Roger (transportation system for dogs needing foster or adoptive homes). Rusty was adopted from me in March 2007 but returned because his owner could not deal with his fearfulness. :-( Rusty spent the first part of his life chained in someone's back yard. When he was only 8 months old, he and 2 siblings were surrendered to a shelter in Florida. They were emaciated. The siblings were adopted shortly, but Rusty, lacking the characteristic "Leopard" merle spots, (and being black), languished in the shelter. He was rescued by Catahoula rescue, neutered and vetted, and then came to live with me his foster mom until he can find his forever home!

Bio:
Poor Rusty, because of his lack of socialisation when he was younger, has a fear of strange noises and places. This is also his first time indoors. I am working with him on his fears and have discovered that underneath that skittish exterior is a friendly, playful, exuberant puppy. Rusty learns fast and he's come a long way in a short time. He has very good house manners, he either lays near you and chews his bone or lies quietly in his open crate and follows you with his eyes. He has yet to destroy or get into anything. He loves to romp and play outside and would be happiest if he had a Catahoula brother or sister to play with. (Or any breed really). He is good on walks, he walks in a straight line and does not pee on every tree, though he does pull like a draught horse. Rusty knows how to climb chain-link fences so he needs to be supervised when outdoors. I have not seen ANY displays of aggression or even dominance from this dog. He is a very good boy and still so young! He needs a patient owner who will help him come out of his shell. Rusty likes people, loves other dogs, and does well with cats. Well my adoptive home didn't work out, so I was returned to my foster home.

I am a loyal dog who bonds tightly with my owner, so all this moving around has made me feel very insecure and sad. I am still trying to be a good boy, but I sometimes get defensive with strange dogs ever since I was attacked while on a walk with my foster mom. I am still a bit fearful, but I am much better now than I was.

I love to play with my foster brother, Bandit, and foster sister, Emma. We could play all day long!

I would LOVE to be adopted by a nice person who will love me, train me, and play with me. Another dog to play with would be nice too. I've been in rescue for too long! I am ready for my very own forever home!!!

I've been adopted!

Rusty was adopted on March 31, 2007 by a nice man living in New York state. He has a purebred Catahoula sister to play with and gets to sleep in the bed!
