This is my first diary entry. I'm so glad I found Dogster. This has been a difficult year for me. As my profile says I'm 12 years old. I can't believe it! I still wish I was a puppy! A few months ago, on the eve of my 12th birthday I had to undergo a tie back surgery for my larynx paralysis. It all started when I would go outside and frolic and run around and when I'd come back inside, I couldn't catch my breath. My family would get very scared. Sometimes my lips and tongue would turn blue. At first my family thought I was eating something outside I wasn't supposed to, but when my symptoms got worse, I had to go to the vet. My doctor delivered bad news to my mom and sister saying my heart was enlarged and my windpipe was contorted because there was fluid in my lungs. I've never seen my family more upset. We didn't know how this could happen. I was really scared, but I stayed brave like I've always been. After lots of long talks my family decided it was not my time to go and that they needed to help me if it was possible. We took a long road trip to a heart specialist and they told my my larynx was becoming paralyzed. If it went untreated it would eventually fail and I might fatally choke. There was an option though and that was to have a tie back surgey that permanently tied back one side of my larynx. There was still a chance I could choke, but this was my only hope. My family was devestated. They thought it might be time to let me go on to a better life. But, as a family they decided I was still young at heart and this freak medical spout was not enough to bring me down. I had the surgery and I've been recovering great! It's been funny trying to learn how to drink and eat again. I can't eat my dry food anymore, but I'm so happy I can still act the age that I feel. I wasn't supposed to jump on the bed or play for 2 weeks after my surgery, but of course that didn't stop me. Now I'm back to my old self, except my bark sounds like I'm trying to impersonate the Godfather. I know my family pretends it's still a loud and scary bark, but I know the truth. ;) I want to give a shout out to all the other LP survivors out there! We're all so brave!!!
