Rainy days

It's been a while since I 've been able to write a diary. You see, Mom has to help with that and she's been "working" a lot this summer. She even had to go on a business trip. All I know is I was sad for a few days and then we drove to the big city one day and Dad disappeared for a while, then, there he was again with Mom!!! Oh boy, oh boy, kisses and wags and ears all soft and Mom giggling. "Back from chicago"
that was fun.

Mom and Dad say it's been a rainy summer. They talk about how green everything is. But I still have to go "outside" to "go potty" and, well, it's not easy when you have to shake the water off before you can "go" and the water keeps dripping on you and you have to shake the water off before you can go and still the water is coming down... boy. and you got to "wait" and get your "paws" wiped before you can get in the house. Some days we didn't go for a walk because of rain. The only good thing about rain is how good everything smells AFTER the rain. Oh I could smell the wet ground and the grass and the wildflowers and the air and the deck and the gravel path for hours! I love to stick my nose in ground squirrel holes and if the ground's wet some sticks to my nose and I can keep smelling it until it tickles and I've got to rub it off.

smells and stinks

I was reminded by a new dogster pal that I neglected to relate my interest in smells and stinks and even pleasant olfactory sensations before now. I've been quite clear about my interest in snow and more recently in the water stream from the hose. But smells ....

Have you not savored the aroma of a blade of grass from ground to tip? And done it again and again?

Have you not thwarted the "powerwalk" plans of your Mom or Dad by refusing to leave the site of long-past dog, cat, coyote, rabbit, squirrel, elimination until it was throughly examined?

And, when it's your time to "do business", do your humans wonder what the heck is taking so long? Got to find the right place...smells.

And, when smell overwhelms, you've just got to start licking, too. Like when the humans apply lotion or sunscreen. They get pretty annoyed with that.

School update

I started school last Monday and Mom says we're going again tonight. I disrupted things pretty well. I mean why was everybody keeping their dogs from playing. That really got me. I had to bark. A lot. the teacher gave mom a water pistol to stop me barking. still, I got lots of treats during class. I'm not sure what this is all about. Something about attention and distractions and paying attention to Mom with distractions....it's quite above my head really. I want to PLAY!!!!!!!

I got a bath!

It started out simply enough. Dad was washing a couple of trailer wheels with the hose and a scrub brush. Well, water from the hose nozzle is almost as fun as snow. I've GOT to eat it. Dad obliged me for a while, even shooting the hose out and away so I'd chase it (and he could get some work done, I guess). Then Mom came along and saw how muddy I was getting and said I'd have to have a bath before I could come in the house. Moms. I never had a bath before. It was fun when it involved the hose and I got to eat the water, but then they put sudsy stuff all over and it smelled. Mom said it smelled nice, but I thought the mud smelled better. anyway, I got the patio door all dirty from shaking off the water and suds. Then I got to lay in the sun and chase bugs on the deck til I dried off. that part was good. I heard Dad say they weren't going to bathe me very often. Maybe next time they'll let me stay muddy.

It's morning. My favorite. Well, along with supper and ball and snow. But I can't figure out why my folks don't like morning. I mean it's morning....the sun's out, the critters are crawling, it's almost time for my walk...but there they sit in the big bed drinking something "hot" from their hand bowls. I do everything I can to get them going. I yawwwwwhiiiiiiiinnnnnn rooo orroooo. wag my tail, sit nice by the bed, jump up on the bed, show my belly, get a little crazy cute....but still....

Oh they're getting up. Mom and Dad are up! Ohboyohboyohboy. what are we going to do now??!!!! It's morning!

But heh heh heh heh sometimes I've got to slam on the brakes throw up some dust and come back to get it. Whoo! Tired! gotta get a drink. heh heh heh pant pant. Mom said I looked silly with dirt on my nose.

Life is good with balls to chase and a human to repeatedly throw them.

10 May 2006

Mom signed me up for "school" yesterday. What is school and why is she so pleased with herself? I don't think I'm going to like this. More "waiting" and stuff like that probably.

On a brighter note we just got back from a really neat walk. Mom started off like we usually do, and I had to "heel" past the house with the big black dog that is chained out and barks all the time. But then! we went a totally new way! Boy, there were new smells all over. and we passed horses in two different places. we even went out on the "big road" and I had to "heel" again. Mom told me "yes!" and "that-a-way" and "what a good girl" and even gave me some little cookies. I must have been doing something good, 'cause then I got to run in a big field. I'm tired now. Even without snow, walks are good. And, I don't have to have my paws wiped when we get home.

I've been forever home for a year

24 April 2006

It’s been over a year – a whole year! with my family. I think my folks thought I was too much to handle at first, but now they really love me….you see, I managed to squirm into their hearts. I think I did that pretty quick, but I was kind of a wild pup and didn’t understand housetraining or how to control myself. My Mom says she just can’t figure out how I could be so smart and not be quicker to housetrain. She almost gave up on me – I don’t really believe that, but I’ve heard them say it. But I’m OK now. I even get to sleep out of my crate on my very own bed. I’ve weighed about 40 pounds since august, so I guess that’s how big I’m gonna get. I’m very pretty, at least I'm told so often.

I know how to “sit” and “sit pretty” and say “how do” (shake). I know “down” and “heel” (but not with distraction) and I always "sit" and “wait” at the door or for my supper. I can “find” stuff pretty well, too (especially cookies). One time, I found Dad, but he didn't have a cookie for me, so that wasn't any fun. But what I really love most of all is snow. I love to lie in it, scoop it up and eat it on the run, jump after snowballs and chase the snow shovel. I just can’t get enough snow. But my folks say there might not be any more snow for a long time??!!! Something about seasons changing....they tell me a lot of stuff but I don't know what they're talking about.

Why can’t there be snow every day? When there isn’t snow, I like to chase and fetch balls and go for walks and we just got a new Frisbee. It’s pretty fun here. There are lots of wild critters that I watch from inside, but my folks don’t want me to chase them they say “leave it” or “no chase” a lot. That’s hard. It’s also hard not to bark or get excited when a car goes by or the UPS man comes…it just doesn’t happen that much out here. I don’t know why Mom and Dad don’t get more excited about those things, I try to tell them what’s going on, but they seem more interested in getting me to “settle”. Did I tell you that I like being brushed – it feels good and my folks make such a fuss over me, but I really don’t like having my nails clipped. Nobody here seems to care that I don’t like it, they do it anyway.

Well, maybe this summer we’re going to go hiking. I don’t even know what that is, but a neighbor gave me a backpack. Said I could carry my own water and cookies? I’m not sure I really like it, but maybe I’ll get used to it. Maybe we can just go for a ride in the truck.

Oh! Did I say that I really like snow?

Sophie's first week at home

April 10, 2005 to the good folks at ark-valley humane society

This is Jinx, here, but my new people are calling me "Sophie" (I think). But I get lot's of "Good girl" and "Good puppy" so I'm not sure. This is a pretty neat place...there is sooo much to smell and do....every day is different. I didn't like my crate much at first and I still fuss for awhile when it is bedtime, but Mom says I haven't messed my crate the last three nights and I do "good potty outside" in the middle of the night. I think I'm catching on to doing my business outside, unless I get really distracted. Yesterday, I met the neighbor's horses, and I had to bark they were so big. But Dad stood with me and kept me close and eventually a big black horse named Oso touched noses with me. That tired me out for the rest of the day. Plus the ride in the truck to get there.

Anyway, I miss my pals there, but I think I could get used to living with my new people. They want to teach me what a "walk" is, Mom is really looking forward to that, but I think I'm a little too curious (whatever that is) right now. So, we play "fetch" in the house (oh yeah! I impressed them with how well I "give" my toy so we can keep playing) and we do really short practice walks in the driveway until I pull too much. I just can't help it.

Do you know there are real coyotes out here? Sometimes we hear them at night. Mom and Dad say I sound like one when I'm fussing in my crate.

Well, just wanted to say hi and thanks to everybody there for being so nice to me before.

Sophie
that's short for Anna-Sophie Mutt'rr I heard she's a famous German violinist or rather Anne-Sophie Mutter is anyway
