Riley's mama (Periwinkle) was living at the Aussie rescue in Sacramento when my friend Catherine adopted her. Catherine had never owned a dog before and thought it would be a nice addition to her home. When Periwinkle moved in with Catherine in Marin she just started getting fatter and fatter. The vets suggested cutting back on her food. When this didn't work, they investigated further and found out she was "with child", or rather with 8, as it turned out. When we ran into Catherine at the 1 year birthday party of our mutual friends' child, she told us the tale and showed us the pictures. Then she agreed to let us have our pick of the litter. Riley (born Pumpernickle) was the biggest of the puppies and was nearly overlooked because he was sleeping behing the toilet in the makeshift "puppy room". Riley is still probably the biggest of the litter (we still see the family on occasion), and getting him was definitely the best decision we ever made!
Riley has his mama's "blue merle" Aussie coat, but with shorter hair and a curled tail. There were two other "blue merle" dogs in his litter, along with one that looked like a terrier, and 4 that looked like belgian shepherds. Catherine found great homes for all of them.
