CHEESE; a walk anywhere, anytime; the beach; harrassing cats; sleeping; being w/humans who love him; running off leash; the bed or sofa -especially if there are pillows involved; riding into brooklyn after a cross-country road trip.
baths, salt on sidewalks in the winter, beaches that don't allow dogs, strangers who insist on making eye contact with him, not being allowed on the sofa or bed, his JD not being home.
not into toys, but a kong w/ smelly human food stuffed in it will do.
CHEESE, Sardines, turkey, salmon, grass-fed steak.
going to the beach or to the park
Sighing and harrumphing in such a way that there is no doubt what he is thinking. Taking a note to someone in another room. the ability know if you are even thinking of going to the kitchen for some cheese.
Rowan was abandoned in Prospect Park in Brooklyn when he was just under 1 yr. old. My neighbor and her dog found him and brought him home. She knocked on my door and told me to come into her apt across the hall, she had something to show me. I walked in and saw the most beautiful animal I had ever seen. He had such a sad yet calm look on his face. My neighbor asked if I wanted him. I said no, my apt was too small, I already had a 16 year-old cat and I had a roommate. I did agree to take him in until I found him a permanent home as long as he didn't harass my cat. He didn't. For that first two weeks I had him he didn't bark or chew on anything, he didn't shed and didn't beg. I put up posters to see if someone lost him or if someone wanted to give him a good home. About two weeks after I took him in, a man called to ask if I was still looking for a home for Rowan. Even though I hadn't planned on it, I said "I'm sorry, Rowan's already found a home." That dog must've been eavesdropping, because right after that, he started barking, chasing the cat, chewing up everything in site, growling at strangers , and begging like a pro.
He is an angel and we wouldn't trade him for the world.
Rowan was the best dog, everRowan has peed in 22 states!
He really DOES answer to "my fellow American" (we have only tried it during presidential election years) He was told by a passer-by that he should start his own breed. Rowan was the best dog. He amazed us all the time with his brilliance and devotion to our family. We will always love him and miss him so much.
Rowan once stopped a a thief from stealing a neighbor's bicycle.
He's named after the Rowan tree, which is very powerful in Celtic mythology. He's also named after the Tupelo tree because, once he gets to know you, he's as sweet as Tupelo honey.
He's great in a canoe even though he only first got in one this summer.
Gopher tortoises really freak him out.
A rather inebriated fellow once told Rowan that he was "beautiful, like a bagel". We think that the guy was referring to Rowan's tail, which curls into a shape that arguably resembles a bagel.
Rowan can be pretty unfriendly to strangers, but once he realizes that you are part of his pack, he is a big, gentle teddy bear full of sweetness for those he loves.
Rowan will wear just about any hat and sit there with it on until the cows come home as long as you promise him a piece of cheese first.
bark first, ask questions later
