Sun Sign:
Quick Bio:
-pound dog

Birthday:
January 21st 2006

Likes:
Playing with his rope, going for long walks, and tracking.

Pet-Peeves:
Being banned from our bed, when the kitty isn't.

Favorite Toy:
A big, soft knotted cotton rope. He'll shake and toss it by himself, but prefers to have one of us on the other end of it.

Favorite Food:
He loves raw vege snacks, especially carrots and romaine ribs. Sportmix Gourmet Peanut Dog Biscuits. Chicken Soup For the Dog Lover's Soul.

Favorite Walk:
Anywhere! He likes the alleys through our neighborhood because there are lots of interesting things to sniff, and all the back yard dogs come to see him.

Best Tricks:
He learned how to shell peanuts by watching me. He loves bubble wrap, and can systematically pop every bubble. If he wants to show me something, he grabs my hand gently and tries to lead me there.

Arrival Story:
Duncan was part of a litter of puppies found on a farm in rural Indiana. We don't know if they were dumped, or born in the wild, but he'd been living on his own long enough to know how to dig wild onions and hunt rodents. He and his sister were captured by animal control when they were about eight weeks old. Within an hour of finding his profile on Petfinder, my husband and I were on our way to the small town where he was located. When we met him, he was filthy, wormy, had pneumonia, and bite wounds on his face. His pasterns were so weak he looked like he was running on the backs of his knees, and his left hock popped sideways with every step he took. Yet in spite of all of his problems, he had an air of quality and nobility about him. We could just tell he was going to be a great dog.

Bio:
And he is! Our rough little puppy has matured into a handsome, healthy dog. It's amazing what a little care and good nutrition can accomplish. With time, and lots of slow exercise, he outgrew his joint problems. In the beginning, he was afraid of all the new city sights and sounds - pretty much everything man-made - so it took some concentrated exposure to get him used to life on our busy street. But he's a smart boy, and within a month it was like he'd been around traffic all his life. We don't know what his breeding is, but his looks, size, and personality would indicate a lot of German Shepherd blood, with maybe some Husky or Chow thrown in. He's a very energetic dog, extremely intelligent with a strong independent streak, but he can also be amazingly sensitive and gentle. Recently when my back was injured, I was worried about walking him, because any twisting movement would cause pain. He's a good dog, but his prey drive is developed from living wild and we're still teaching him not to pull when he sees a rabbit. I didn't need to worry, though. He somehow understood my situation, and walked like he was on eggshells, ignoring all bunnies and looking back at me constantly to make sure I was okay. A few days later, when the pain was gone, he was back to his normal self.
