Arrival Story:
My old dog, a female mixed breed who was deaf and dumb as a rock was stolen while I was visiting a friend. I drove 800 miles round trip every weekend going door to door, etc. The last weekend, someone told me that a Fredonia vet took dogs in that were on their way to doggie death row, in order to give them more time. I went there. He told me that he had no older female dogs, but I was welcome to come back and look anyway. There was Freddy, all hunched over in one of those small vet cages. I asked them to let him out and he tore butt all over the hospital, doing wheelies and nearly ripping out an IV in some poor dogs forearm. I adopted him that day as he was on his way to doggie death row. That weekend, it was a sign that everywhere I went, there were puppies or young dogs who needed a home. When I took him out to my truck, I just said "Come on Fred, get in the truck. Oh, I guess your name is Fred!"

Bio:
Freddy was Mr. Adventure. When he was young, he was a very serious runner and just about gave me heart attacks several times. He could be evil. Once he got out in the hills of Western NY. With three of us out trying to catch him, he would do a "fly-by" 2 ft. from your hand and you could see the big grin on his face as he did it...laughing all the way. He loved the beach and rolling in dead fish was especially nice. But, true to his character, if you left him alone in the mud room, 2 hours later he'd be sparkling clean. All the white bits clean as mountain snow. He was my constant companion. We went everywhere together. Even with Epilepsy and an arthritic spine, he was stoic and never really let on he had problems. When I lost my good health, he was my reason to get up in the morning...even though he was always a serious sleep in kind of dog. Saturdays, you wouldn't see him until 10 sometimes. As he aged, he took on the bit of Grumpy Old Man, which he played to perfection. It somehow earned him more treats and the privilege of begging ( in a very dignified way) at the table. Which he'd never had when he was younger. Freddy was put down January 10, 2006. He kept a stiff upper lip until the day before he died. It wasn't until the very end when we found out how sick he was. There isn't a day goes by that we don't think of him and miss him.
