Arrival Story:
Shay came to me through Basenji Rescue and Transport (BRAT) in May 2003. She spent the first four and a half years of her life in the kennel of a commercial breeder. She was healthy, but very undersocialized and the poor girl didn't even know how to play when I first got her! She bonded with me quickly and she followed me everywhere, but it took her about a month to learn that toys were fun. And when she did finally start to play, she would only play by herself despite the best efforts by me and my sister's dog to get her to play with us! (I think she thought I was crazy!) Shay has really come a long way since then. She is still aloof (some might say "rude") with strangers and people she doesn't see often, but that is typical of her breed. She loves the people close to her and even seeks out attention, and she will occassionally play with other dogs.
