Likes: She loves pulling things - me on Rollerblades, tug o war, her springpole. . . She also loves to play with other dogs! She loves sleeping in and going to bed all tightly rolled into her cat bed, only to fall out as soon as she stretches in her sleep.
Pet-Peeves: being outside when people are inside or vice versa, seeing bears on TV and she'll quiver with fear/anxiety when getting a bath
Favorite Toy: She loves anything with a squeaker in it or chewing on butcher shop big knuckle bones
Favorite Food: She's not picky, but she really loves steamed broccoli (but we don't like the effect it has on her noxious fumes)
Favorite Walk: trail hikes with creekbeds or the beach, playing fetch with the Chuck It
Best Tricks: jumping over 6 feet straight up in the air, rolling over, shake, being 50 pounds of wiggly, really photogenic fun!
Arrival Story: After much thought and research about the breed, my boyfriend and I went to different local animal shelters and found her at the 3rd one we visited. We didn't even interview any other dogs. She was the first one that caught my eye since she was the only dog not barking and we got her 3 days later after she was spayed. She also had beautiful markings complete with "eyeliner". Her shelter name was "Maybelline" because of that.
Bio: We got her at 6 months old. She's been through 2 rounds of obedience school and is very smart. She gets way excited with other dogs and loves to meet new people too. She hates rain, but loves swimming. She is very vocal and whines when she wants something & barks when she's playing. At just over a year old, she started to settle down a little bit and leash walking has finally become an enjoyable experience for all.

I've Been On Dogster Since:
Cesar is having a contest to find a photo of a dog reading his book or watching his show to use in a future newsletter, so I'm trying out! Here's a link to his contest:

There are no words to express what you meant to me, but I will try anyway. I got you when I was 29 and had never had a maternal bone in my body. I owned a home and wanted to share my life with a dog and have some fun doing it. Boy, I didn't know what fun was until I had you. Your energy, excitement and enthusiasm was boundless and forced everyone around you to truly live in the moment. "It takes a village", so all your aunts and uncles helped us, your parents, to correct you when you needed it and to teach you manners. So many rules to learn since you were a pit bull and needed to be an ambassador for the breed. Tug o war has rules, leash walking and jumping, all needed to be done with some regard for spacial awareness, etc. But you learned it all with treats and your favorite words, "Good Girl". You were even gentle and well behaved with your 13 month old human cousin. Your intense eyes always looked right into my soul and I knew that I had to give 100% whenever we were together since you were always fully present in every interaction and experience.
You learned a lot, but in reality, you were teaching me. You taught me about unconditional love, the joy that comes with giving, that my authority is to be respected, that I am strong enough to boss you around, that cuddling is very important at the beginning and end of every day, to experience the word with all 5 senses, that running is better than walking if you want to see it all . . .
I love you sweet Bella, forever. Although your time with me was short, it is the most special time in my life thus far and I thank you for it. I am so relieved that I knew to cherish every single moment with you because now I have tons of video, pictures and memories that I recount whenever I need to smile. You were and are my joy. Thank you sweet girl.
On June 25, 2006, Bella was hit by a truck. The internal injuries she suffered took her life on July 10, 2006 at 12:30 PM.
Bella will be missed deeply and sorely. As her parents, we are total wrecks right now, but know that in time, this horrific pain will settle down to a dull ache and we look forward to that time. Until then, we celebrate and honor her by telling stories of her every time we cry. And as soon as we are ready, we will rescue another. That is the deepest way to honor her and her glorious personality and breed. She touched our lives and showed us how to truly love.
The only good news is that we saved a female pit bull puppy walking in the road on our way home from the emergency room. Her owner did not know she was out. Later that week, the same thing happened with a German Shepherd too.
