We had Frankie's half sister, Imani; who came home with us in December. In September, we were asked if we would consider taking Imani's 9 week old half-sister. Huh? A puppy? We don't need a puppy! We don't even WANT a puppy! Um, ok, so when do we pick her up? Minutes after meeting her, Dad was wrapped securely around one of her giant paws. As they say, the rest is history.

Purpose of a Dog - from a 4 yr. old

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year old
Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife, Lisa,
and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Belker and they
were hoping for a miracle.

I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family
we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the
euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.

As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be
good for the four-year old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt
as though Shane might learn something from the experience.

The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's
family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for
the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on.
Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy
seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or
confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's death,
wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than
human lives.

Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why."

Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next
stunned me.

I'd never heard a more comforting explanation.

He said, "People are born so that they can learn how to live a good
life - - like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?"
The four year old continued, "Well, dogs already know how to do that,
so they don't have to stay as long."

Memories Are Golden

They say memories are golden.
well maybe that is true
But we never wanted memories,
we only wanted you.

A million times we've needed you
A million times we've cried .
If love alone could have saved you
you never would have died.

In life we loved you dearly,
in death we love you still.
In our hearts you hold a special place
no one could ever fill.

If tears could build a stair case
And heartache build a lane
We'd walk the path to heaven
and bring you back again.

Our family chain is broken
And nothing seems the same
but as God calls us one by one,
the chain will link again.

Heaven's Doggy Door

My best friend closed his eyes last night,
As his head was in my hand.
The doctors said he was in pain,
And it was hard for him to stand.
The thoughts that scurried through my head
As I cradled him in my arms,
Were of his younger, puppy years,
And Oh...his many charms.

Today, there was no gentle nudge,
With an intense "I love you" gaze,
Only a heart that's filled with tears
Remembering our joy-filled days.
But an Angel just appeared to me,
And he said, "You should cry no more,
God also loves our canine friends,
He's installed a doggy door!"
