Hey, I didn't see any signs that said only people children were allowd to play on this playground.

Yes, I did get wet in the rain, but you should have seen mom. It started to rain while we were out walking and mom decided to just keep on going anyway.

Quick Bio:

Likes:
Food, her mommy, walks, people, attention and cuddling, barking at me, skunks (her favorite perfume), dead animals (to eat and roll in), the all important belly rub, and more food.

Pet-Peeves:
Being left behind or ignored, any sort of grooming, vet visits, cars coming up behind her, and not being allowed to eat as much as she wants. When I put food in front of her and tell her she can't go eat it untill I say so.

Favorite Toy:
When she was young, my Uncle's ACD was her absolute favorite toy. She's not into toys so much anymore. But her favorites are squeaky toys that are dumbbell shaped whatever we can use for Tug-o-war. She won't play with toys by herself.

Favorite Food:
Almost anything edible. She's a real food hound and will eat way too much if allowed. But I think dead animals may top the list.

Favorite Walk:
She likes new places. Off leash at the lake so she can sniff and explore, find dead things, edible bits, skunks (she looks for this stuff and I have to watch her), mark her territory, wade in the water, and chase small animals.

Best Tricks:
Wave, take a bow, spin, twist, sit, down, stay, come, jump up, jump through a hoop or over jumps, a sort of broad jump using small jumps, getting onto things I point to, going through a tunnel, back up, high five, shake, dead dog, quiet, and speak.

Arrival Story:
I got Sky from a family member who had a pair of Australian Cattle Dogs. I was in the 6th grade and had been asking if I could get my own dog. I had originally wanted a German shepherd, but my Grandma wouldn't let me. Then one day I went to see these little heeler pups, and I had to have one. Sky was the runt and I just fell in love with her, and I wasn't the only one interested in her. I got permission to bring her home, and even paid for her myself with my own money. They called her mud pie back then because she had a habit of putting her feet in her water bowl and then finding some nice dirt.

Bio:
Sky looks so much like her dad in the face and has more of his temperament then her mom. She even has a tail root spot just like dad. She's lucky she has a tail because the lady just didn't have the heart to have her little tail chopped off. My Grandma wanted me to have her tail docked, but I refused. I know she's not a perfect ACD, but she comes from unregistered, backyard bred, working and pet dogs. She is just so sweet, loves people, gets along with most other animals, and just wants to be with me. For the most part she's well behaved and can be trusted off leash. She lifts her leg like one of the guys and wants to pee everywhere when on walks. Her thing is to put her head or body between your legs, or if your sitting down, under your arm. She also likes to bury her head in your lap, so all you see is the back of her head and ears instead of her face. It's hard to ignore any of that. She even rubs her head and face on me. Sometimes I wonder if she's just using me to get rid of her eye boogers, because sometimes after getting a drink she’ll wipe her mouth on me like I’m a paper towel. If I'm sitting in a chair she may rub herself up under my legs. She flips onto her back and wiggles back and forth like crazy. I call it the belly dance. I think that she must look like she's having a seizer or something, because I've been asked if she was ok a few times. She makes snorting and grunting sounds when being petted, as well as some other sound I've never heard form a dog before. She loves food and tries to convince people that they really should feed her. A lot of times she seems to know you have food as soon as she spots you. She will try doing the tricks that she knows to get it. And if that doesn't work, there is always the look, the stare, and the barking of demand. I think she's a bit on the mellow and timid side for her breed. She's kind of the very toned down ACD model. She has shown some interest cows, but I'm not sure she's really cow dog material. When we lived in the country we let someone keep cows on our property. Sometimes when I came out the door, she would get excited and start for the fence where the cows were. She would keep looking back waiting to see if I was coming. Sky takes a never herd alone approach. She used to be a country dog, but now we live in town. I know she misses it, walking down the street on a leash just isn’t the same as the freedom she used to have. I have to keep her on a diet to keep her weight down; she used to be a pretty chubby puppy. Now that she's lost weight she acts younger and is more interested in doing active things. She has a lot of fatty tumors. The vet says that they are fine for now, some may have to be.removed later on if they become a problem.

And It's A Double Whammy

June 18th 2008 7:25 am   [link to this entry]

Last month Mom splurged and went on a three week vacation to England with her family. Her Step Father is from there and wanted to go back for a visit. She said it just wouldn’t be possible for me to go along with them. I’ll have to just take her word for it. Well, Mom didn’t get much of a welcome home when she got back. In fact she rather got hit with a double whammy. The night after she got back home she had to go to the hospital where her Grandpa was dying. She said that seeing her Grandma sitting next to him, and helplessly watching him take his last breaths was heart wrenching. Then as if that was not enough, while mom was gone I went and tore my anterior cruciate ligament (or ACL) in my left back leg. Because of her Grandpas recently passing, I didn’t see the Vet until about a week afterwards. She just knew that my leg would probably require surgery before she even found out what was wrong and just dreaded the Vet visit. She may have even dreaded it more then I did. Surgery is going to be around $700. Let’s just say that she’s really regretting that one day trip to France now. She says that she didn't really have time to see all she wanted in France anyway. The money could have paid for my medical bills instead. And then there is the possibility of needing to have a fatty tumor removed in the future. But I suppose you just never see these little surprises coming at you until they just walk up and slap you in the face. Mom has just dropped me off at the Vet’s this morning for my surgery, and I don’t get to go home until the next morning. We hope everything goes well and that I’ll still be able to use my leg well enough to get me through my golden years. And we also hope and pray that I don’t tear the ACL in my other leg. The recovery time sure is long though, so that’s really going to bite.

The Celebration

September 22nd 2007 1:29 pm   [link to this entry]

Just last weekend our small town had their little yearly celebration. They had a parade, booths with things to sell, food, and stuff like that. There was a rodeo, but mom was too tired from work to even think about going. Mom says it’s all really kind of boring, but we had nothing to do and went on down anyway. It was kind of nice for me because I got so much attention and lots of complements from lots of people. People wanted to know what kind of dog I was, and said I was so pretty and seemed like a really nice dog. A bunch of little kids came over to pet and hug on me, and being the nice puppy that I am, I let them. Mom even let me have some of her hamburger and fries, as well as some saved ice with vanilla flavor…..yummy!!!!! She said it was all right for me to have a little treat sometimes. I think people were impressed that mom could sit on the ground with food in her lap with out me diving in and trying to help myself. One guy told us that he used to have a bunch of dogs like me, but he couldn’t even give them away. Now who wouldn’t want a great dog like me, don’t they know we’re just awesome? We talked with a kid whose mom shows dogs. He asked if mom showed me, and mom had to confess that I’m not registered and would probably be laughed out of any show ring. Ahhhh…what do those judges know anyway? Can’t they tell that I’m a real winner? I think I should have even been in the parade too, maybe at the beginning on my own float.
