Arrival Story:
I had been fostering cats and kittens for the Ottawa, ON Humane Society for 2 years. I went to the pound in January '99 to return a family of kittens and asked if they had any dogs for a change. They gave me this little no name dog, so sick and ugly that even as a 6 month puppy, no one would adopt him over Christmas. He had been picked up as a stray, (he must have been so cold in December) and had contracted kennel cough in the overcrowded humane society building. I brought him home and he gradually recovered. Niko was so ill, he couldn't walk to the next driveway. After 3 months, he still wasn't fully recovered, and the humane society felt that they would be unable to find a home for a dog that was not 100% healthy. He still had a terrible cough, with a greenish unpleasant discharge. They wanted to destroy him, as their facilty was overwhelmed with cats and dogs. He had been in the "system" too long. So we kept him of course.

Bio:
He has almost fully recovered, although he occasionally coughs in the morning when he wakes up. Niko has boundless energy thanks to his genentics - he is highly intelligent, and really needs to be occupied 18 hours a day. He only has 2 modes, asleep and wacko. He spends his days with his buddy Lucky, and has lots of room to move in our big fenced back yard. We try to get them out often for runs on the local trails. He was in flyball for a while - but needs a little more obedience training to be really great at it. (He is a bit like a kid with ADD). Your arm would fall off before Niko would tire of bringing the ball back to you! Never a dull moment with Niko around. Kids love his 'bring back the ball and drop it at their feet' trick. Update July 2009. Niko has recently survived a severe bout of pneumonia, thanks to the care of the Guelph University Hospital. He seems back to his old energetic self, but we are watching him closely.
