Arrival Story:
The Big Boy was already 5 years old when he was abandoned by his owner at a kill shelter. I was a volunteer and was instantly attracted to Desoto's unusual red leopard coat but fell in love with his big heart. I kept pleading with the shelter staff to extend his euthanasia date, hoping someone would see how sweet he was and adopt him, but no one was interested in an 80-pound older dog. So Desoto was there for a month and a half before I finally coaxed my husband into letting us foster him. We decided to keep him soon thereafter because he has the best temperament of any dog we've known. He can be gentle when visiting a nursing home or small children and protective when he senses danger. In fact, he once saved me from a carjacker in New Orleans. When my husband was a kid, he always wanted a dog but couldn't have one. He now calls Desoto his "boyhood dog." We couldn't imagine our lives without him.

The General is a wonderful big brother to his three younger sisters, Shelby, Darby & Jolie. He is a benevolent leader, which is the best kind. When it's time for a walk, he sits and "marches" his front legs with anticipation. It's also fun to watch the Big Boy trot because he actually prances and his tail bounces around like it's on a spring. He's a very happy dog and he makes everyone around him happy, too.
