We knew we wanted a big dog to join our family but couldn't find a large dog at any of the local shelters that got along with cats. When we finally found Jack he was 3 months old and already living with a 20 year old cat of his own. Our cats don't particularly like Jack but they have the upper hand with him. There's really no question who's in charge around here. Meeow!

My Life as a Dog

Sad Sad Day!

We had to give away our sweet Jack. He, unfortunately, bit someone badly enough for an emergency room visit. Our neighbour escaped with just a few stitches but, in order to show good faith and avoid a tremendous lawsuit, we agreed to place Jack in a new home. He now lives with a wonderful man in NJ. Thank God for Doug, who came to our rescue and gave our sweet, but very protective boy a safe home. My love will always be with Jack, the best dog ever. I don't think I'll ever love anyone quite that way again.

Jack adjusted very well to his new home but seemed sad somehow. We figured he must be missing his former Mom and Dad and litter mates. I couldn't move Janet and Larry to VA so we went looking for a new puppy for him. We found an add in the paper about free puppies and decided to check them out. It turned out that a neighbor of ours had an "accidental" litter of about 13 border collie mix pups. 12 of them were still awaiting adoption so we had the whole pack to choose from. I let me kids meet them first to narrow down the choices to their favorites and then brought Jack in to meet the finalists. One little cream colored puppy with a streak of white on her nose made a dash for Jack immediately. She was obviously thrilled to see him. It was like she'd just spotted her long lost brother and maybe she had! She wove in and out of his long legs, practically tripping our tall boy and showered him with kisses. Needless to say, she came home with us that night. They've been inseperable ever since. They sleep together curled up in a "puppy ball." I was quite surprised at how deeply and quickly they bonded. Now I'm not the first person Jack looks for when he's been out anymore but that's ok. Love like that deserves my respect!

Thank you Jack!

Jack is the best dog ever to grace the Eastern hemisphere with his presence! He is my first dog and I can honestly say that I HAD NO IDEA how wonderful dogs were until I met Jack. I know several people who have dogs. I've always enjoyed them but, with the exception of our friend's shepherd/malamute mix Isis, never felt more than a passing affection for them. Now that Jack has opened my eyes to the canine world and I see them all as special creatures to be adored. In fact, he has reminded me of the love I had for all creatures as a child. What a lovely gift he's given me. Adult responsibilites and parenthood started to overshadow the simple joy I once felt around animals. How could I have forgotten how lovely they are? Just as my children reminded me about fireflies and dandilion spores, Jack has brought back a piece of my innocence. Sounds hokey, huh? Well, I take happiness where I find it. I hope all of you are enjoying your dogs as much as I am. Man's best friend indeed!
