The Gift

Mom was sitting outside on the deck in the porch swing, reading a book and enjoying the sounds of birds singing, the nice weather...

Without looking up from her book, she knew that I had walked up to stand in front of her, not pawing at her, but just standing quietly.

Mom reached out her hand and patted the top of my head. I didn't move.

After awhile, Mom reached out again without raising her eyes from her book, and patted the top of my head. I still didn't move.

Mom suddenly realized that I had been standing in front of her for quite awhile and she reached out her hand again to touch me and at the same time, looked at me.

She gave a little screech as I tried to give her my gift of a very large dead gopher that I had caught, and had been standing in front of her with it hanging out of both sides of my mouth, just waiting for her to take it.

I should have known that she wouldn't appreciate it. I used to drop the dead critters in her lap and she would get upset, so I figured if I would just hold it, she would be happier about getting it.
She wasn't.
