Arrival Story:
The owner of a feed store where I buy all my pet food knew me and Ginny (who past away 2005) and she happened to be at the local shelter dropping off food donations. A lady came in with a basset hound and was going to drop her off - she was found around her work about 20 miles away. According to the lady who brought her in, she thinks she recognized her from a house she passed on her way to work every day. A basset was tied up outside all the time. She noticed one day that the house seemed abandoned & she didn't see the dog anymore. A few weeks later she heard that the lunch room ladies were feeding a basset outside the school... (makes me a little ticked that people have the mentality to feed a lost animal but don't take them to a shelter for help & a home) ...so she took action and brought her to our shelter. She thinks the people who owned her left her when they moved. So the feed store lady told her about me and they exchanged phone numbers and the lady was willing to take the basset home for the weekend so I could get in touch and see what I thought about wanting a new addition. I didn't think I was ready yet but I went to see her anyways to see what she was like - I was afraid she wouldn't be anything like Ginny, since she was the best doggie I ever had. Turns out, her personality isn't much like Gin's but a vet bill of $500 later, she's here laying next to me. :o)

Bio:
Lucky us (not!), she was in heat so she had to wear diapers until we could get her to the vet for a fixing. She had a couple accidents but I think that was more my fault of not knowing her signals. She took to the dog beds like they had been hers all along and prefers laying on them than the floor. My vacuum appreciates that. She rides in the car nicely, laying in the backseat or just sitting looking out the window. I've yet to hear her bark though she loves to whine & wiggle for attention. She doesn't do a thing when there's a knock at the door or a doorbell. Walks on a leash great and stays with me. The vet estimates she's 2-3 yrs old. She had tapeworms & hookworms and is 20 lbs underweight (around me, that won't take long to fix), but that's about it. She's still getting used to the idea of being indoors. She's a beautiful basset (aren't they all?) with the perfectly placed markings. She may be a youngster, but she's as calm as a senior would be.

Doing Fine...

Something's weighing heavy on my mind...

When I came to live with my new family, I was only 42 lbs and you could see my ribs a little. I think I'm supposed to be around 60-65. It's been about 1 1/2 months and I'm up to 52.

Mom's doing her best to feed me almost anything I want (I know that will be short-lived once I get my weight back), and health-food stuff I don't want. When I try to get Dad to feed me something, he tells me to go see the "lunch lady" (aka Mom). So, I do. I'm kind of picky about my doggie biscuits. Only one kind for me and don't try to change them - I'll know. She's disguising my veggies but I can spot them anywhere. Sometimes I'll eat them and sometimes I give them back to her. I'm not much into dry food but when I'm I get the munchies, usually before bedtime, I'll eat up the bowl she leaves out for me all the time.

I love going outside with Mom. She has to keep me on a leash otherwise I run over to the neighbors house because I know kids live there. I'm good on a leash so I don't mind cuz it's really long and I can run and play with Mom on it. I like rolling on my back, wiggling back and forth until I'm 5 feet away from where I started. I finally found my 'outside' voice (which I use inside too) and when we play, I can't help yelling cuz I'm so happy. I also like walking down at the river's boardwalk. Sometimes the lady that found me goes with us. I kind of ignore the other dogs that walk there, and the geese, but I love stopping so people can pet me. I'm so darn cute that they can't help it.

Well, that's my update. Ahhh-rooooo roooo for now. Back to my bed for a nap (I take about 6 long ones a day).
