Arrival Story:
His mom was tied up outside the owner's house, so a neighbor asked if they could take her into the rescue. When they brought his mom in, they told the rescue there were 2 puppies. So the rescue had to go catch Gilligan and his sister, they were about 2 1/2 months old. He was in a foster home with about 3 other GSD's and some other mixed puppies. I adopted him after graduating college (June 2001), and he was depressed the first 2 weeks I had him, I guess he missed his foster siblings. He is super loving to me and those he is close too, but he is very wary of new people.

Bio:
His mom is pure GSD, but we don't know about his dad. He looks like he has sight hound in him though....Gilligan can spell really well, especially words like "out", "hungry", "potty", and "rawhide". He can also open locked sliding glass doors-even with the stick in the door jam (if it doesn't lay completely flat). He's about 50/50 with flipping treats from his nose and catching them in his mouth. We need to practice that one more often, and he has to really want the treat badly to not just let it fall to the floor.

A losing battle

Unfortunately lymphoma is not curable, and Gilligan lost his battle on May 25th, 2007.

I'm in REMISSION!!!

So the vet says that since my lymph nodes are back to a normal size, I'm considered to be in remission! Yeah me!! I did have one bad week on chemo, I got sick and didn't want to eat for a few days. So mom tried to entice me with some wet food mixed in with my normal food. It tasted pretty good, so I just licked the wet food off the kibble, and then spit the kibble out. Mom didn't like that for some reason. So apparently I wasn't feeling well because the chemo had depleted my white blood cells. I went off of my medication for a week until my counts were back up. And I only get the yucky blue pills twice a week now instead of 3 times a week. Good thing, because I still REALLY REALLY hate taking them. I try to trick Mom into thinking I've swallowed the pill so she'll give me my treat and then I can go spit the pill out. But she must be smarter than I originally thought, because now she checks to make sure I swallowed the pill before I can get the treat. And I really dread my visits to the vet. Once it's all over I realize it wasn't as bad as I was expecting, but that needle just looks like it's gonna hurt!
Anyways, still keep your paws crossed for me, hopefully the cancer wont try to come back!!

Stage III lymphoma

So the vet says I have lymphoma. I don't know what that is, but it makes Mommy sad. I don't know why, because I feel just fine. They say I'm really sick, but I don't feel sick, so they shouldn't worry so much. But because of this so-called lymphoma, I have to go the vet every week and get an injection, and mom keeps shoving pills down my throat every day. But at least I get my favorite treat after each pill, that helps make them go down better! Mom was happy to hear that I might actually gain weight because of the predanizone, supposedly it'll make me more hungry....but we'll see. Maybe if Mom put more tasty things in my bowl, I'd be more hungry!! Anyways, I'll write more about my lymphoma and how I feel about these chemo drugs. So far so good! I still love playing with my sister!
