Arrival Story:
I was volunteering at the animal shelter in Jefferson, WI. When I came down the kennel run after socializing with the cats, there were 3 black lab mix pups and then a near white, fluffy Golden Retriever looking pup. I had lost my long time companion four years prior and was contemplating a new dog. Instead of jumping and barking like the other 3 pups, Casey quietly sat next to me. The people who brought the pups in had lived on a pig farm. Casey threw up "pig mud" and passed a baby pig leg. A technition at the shelter decided to put the other pups down because their bowels could be messed up by such crud. I decided to rescue Casey from certain euthanasia. It's a decision I have never regreted.

Even though she's not a purebred Golden Retriever, the AKC allowed me to show Casey in obedience matches. She won her CD in obedience, is a Canine Good Citizen and was a certified Therapy Dog. Casey has shown the ability to understand and adjust to situations without being coached. She can play hard with big kids and then settle right down next to a baby and be extremely careful. Casey is definitely like no other dog I've owned or encountered. November 18, 2006 - Today I made the final trip to the vet with my beloved Casey. Her senility had advanced to where she could not control her bodily functions. It was heartbreaking to see her realize she had an accident. We realized she had no control over it, but you could tell she felt so bad. What made things especially difficult was that she could still move around great, she wasn't strugling to get up, her body was still strong. It was the most difficult day of my life. She will be terribly missed.
