   Leave a bone for Owen

Owie, Owiebear, Lieutenant Fancypants, Sir Fur, Bubba, Buddha, Buddhabear, Handsome American Brown Dog (which must be sung in off key, escalating tones)

Quick Bio:

April 3rd 1996

Going to the beach and for rides, especially in my Dad’s truck! Hanging out by the Black Box (a.k.a. the fridge), giving high fives/tens, disemboweling my fleece toys, passing gas liberally, sighing heavily when I’m annoyed

That UPS guy and his noisy truck! Having my ears cleaned, stairs, rain, getting my paws wet, doorbells, suitcases, that Crazy Uncle Les guy, when I get left behind at home

Favorite Toy:
Any and all fleece toys (all of which go by the name of “Phil“ - not really sure how that happened), my Nylabones and NylaFrisbee, paper towel tubes, Green Toy (a green elephant), the Dabadoo

Favorite Food:
P-A-S-T-A, any human food, his new Innova food

Favorite Walk:
The beach and around the neighborhood

Arrival Story:
A friend of mine called me one day and told me I simply had to come by the pet store near my apartment after work, as there was a litter of the “cutest puppies ever” there. She was right. The puppies were a mix of the store owner’s two dogs -- a Sheltie and Black Lab/Bull Terrier mix. I fell in love with the runt (not Owen) instantly and then proceeded to hem and haw over the next week about what to do. I was in the midst of graduate school right then, so the timing couldn’t have been worse. So I decided to go for it. I went back and the runt was gone -- someone else had got him. I was crushed and as I played with the other two brothers left, I decided maybe that was a sign that it wasn’t meant to be. I left the store and went back two other times that week. Then the middle brother was gone. I then made the decision to buy the remaining puppy -- soon to be my Owen -- as a birthday gift to myself. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life and coincidentally, I met my husband less than a year later and he had the same name, so now I think it was definitely fate. We are so lucky to have Owen -- he is the best dog anyone could ask for!

Owen was diagnosed at 12 with having Transitional Cell Carcinoma of the bladder. Because he was in such robust form, we decided to proceed with surgery and then chemotherapy. Owen did amazing on 6 rounds of chemo and went into remission. He progressed a month after the relapse and we decided to not make him go through anything else. Owen lived 22 months post diagnosis and they were quality, wonderful months where he was doted on like he was the rest of his life and we made the most of EVERY.SINGLE.DAY. He is missed more than we can even describe. He was, simply, the best dog ever.
